In T20 cricket the main emphasis is on scoring runs quickly rather than individual batters getting high scores. As a result, batters try to maximise their hitting prowess, even though their stay at the crease might be short.

In this way, teams can put huge totals on board as a collective effort of all the batters. The chances of more batters playing cameos compared to individual batters making high scores are higher.

And even if batters come up with big scores, it is really difficult to maintain consistency while making the runs at a beneficial scoring rate for the team. Hence it is challenging to see batters scoring hundreds in T20s.

And if they are backing it up with more than one in a short span, then the achievement becomes commendable and praiseworthy.

In this article, we go through the list of players who have scored the most T20I centuries in a calendar year. A total of 10 players have scored at least two T20I centuries in a calendar year with Sanju Samson leading the list with three hundreds in 2024.

Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma are the other Indians with two hundreds in a calendar year. Get the list of players to score the most T20I centuries in a calendar year.

Sanju Samson | 3 hundreds

Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson leads the list of batters with the most hundreds in T20Is in a calendar year with three centuries in 2024.

Samson started his scoring spree with a 40-ball century against Bangladesh in the final T20I of a three-match series against Bangladesh in Hyderabad. He smashed 11 fours and eight sixes in his 47-ball 111 which powered India to their highest total in T20Is and also to a 133-run win.

Samson backed it up with another century against South Africa in his next game in Durban to become the first Indian batter to score consecutive hundreds in T20Is. He hit 10 sixes and seven fours in his 50-ball 107 to help the visitors win by 61 runs.

Samson created history in Johannesburg by becoming the only batter to score three centuries in T20Is in a calendar year. He remained unbeaten on 109 from 56 balls in the final T20I against the Proteas hitting nine sixes and six fours to help India win the match by a massive 135 runs.

Tilak Varma | 2 hundreds

Tilak Varma became the second Indian batter after Samson to record consecutive T20I centuries during a four-match series against South Africa in 2024.

Batting at number three, Tilak smashed an unbeaten 107 off 56 balls including seven sixes and eight fours in the third T20I against the Proteas in Centurion. His knock helped India past the 200-run mark and set up a thrilling 11-run win over the home side.

In his very next match, Tilak once again notched an unbeaten 120, this time off just 47 balls, smashing 10 sixes and nine fours. His unbroken 210-run association for the second wicket with fellow centurion Samson helped India post a gargantuan 283/1  and the visitors pocketed the four-match series 3-1 with a 135-run win.

Suryakumar Yadav | 2 Hundreds

Suryakumar Yadav owns the rare feat of notching up more than one hundred in a calendar year on multiple occasions. He first achieved it in 2022 before going on to repeat the feat the next year, in 2023.

Both of Suryakumar’s hundreds in 2022 came outside India, the first against England in Nottingham and the next against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui. He capped a dream year in T20Is amassing 1164 runs from 31 innings at an impressive average of 46.56 and a strike rate of 187.43.

In the next year, Suryakumar scored hundreds against Sri Lanka and South Africa showing remarkable consistency to accumulate 733 runs at an average of 48.86 and hitting at 155.95.

T20 cricket is a form of the game where the pace of scoring runs is equally important as the runs scored. The rate of scoring in T20s has gone up over a period of time with batters coming up with innovative and out-of-the-box shots to outscore their opponents.

As a result, the teams depend more on collective cameos from many of their players rather than high scores from individual players.

In this backdrop where individuals find it challenging to put on big scores, some batters have relished playing big shots consistently and found success too, scoring centuries even in the shortest format of the game.

They have taken the art of power-hitting to the next level. They have made big runs consistently and that too at excellent strike rates.

In this article, we glance through the list of players who have scored T20I centuries for India. A total of 12 players have scored at least one T20I century for India with Rohit Sharma leading the list with five hundreds. Get the list of players to score T20I centuries for India.

The Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium is a world-class cricket ground located in Hyderabad, Telangana.

Established in 2003, the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium has a maximum capacity of around 40,000 and is the home ground of the Indian T20 League franchise Team Hyderabad.

Also known as the Uppal Stadium, the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium is owned and operated by Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA).

The HCA previously staged its home matches at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in the Fateh Maidan Sports Complex in central Hyderabad.

Visaka Industries Limited won the open auction for the funding of the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium with a bid worth â‚?5,00,00,000. It was named as Visakha International Cricket Stadium in 2004 after a sum of â‚?3,00,00,000 was paid in advance.

However, former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy changed the name of the stadium to Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in memory of Rajiv Gandhi, a former Prime Minister of India. HCA later acquired the stadium by paying an amount of â‚?3,00,00,000 to Visakkha.

The Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium staged its first international match, a One-Day International (ODI) played between India and South Africa in November 2005. The visitors won the ODI by five wickets.

Five years later, it hosted its first Test match that featured India and New Zealand which ended in a draw.

Later in December 2019, the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium staged its first T20 international played between India and West Indies. Under the leadership of Virat Kohli, India won the first T20I at the venue by six wickets. Since then, it has hosted one more T20I so far.

T20 cricket is a form of the game where boundaries are very precious. It requires batters to go all-out during all phases of the game.

This has resulted in batters shifting their priorities from scoring big to scoring fast in the shortest form of the game. The numbers also reflect a similar shift as strike rates get more importance over batting averages in the stats card.

Batters frequently come up with entertaining cameos that help the team’s cause in putting big totals on the board. They either use sheer power-hitting ability or bring out their creative side in manufacturing out-of-the-box strokes to clear boundaries.

In essence, T20 is a format that maximises the boundary-hitting capability of a batter. So all the key strategies, including practice sessions and strength training, are designed to improve their big-hitting technique.

With games moving to unimaginable speeds and franchises in global T20 Leagues preferring big hitters to run accumulators, the international scene has also taken a leaf out of these leagues.

The international teams have also backed personnel who can go all-out from ball one and play freely without worrying about losing their wicket.

The recent editions of the T20 World Cup are evidence of the changes that sides have made to adjust to the new demands of T20Is.

Here we glance through the list of batters with the most sixes for India in T20Is.

Rohit Sharma | 205 sixes

Rohit Sharma heads the list for most sixes hit by an Indian batter in T20Is with 205 sixes from 151 visits to the crease. Incidentally, Rohit also leads the overall chart for most sixes in T20Is among international batters.

Rohit was instrumental in changing India’s batting approach in T20Is with his all-guns blazing approach at the top of the batting order. His strategy paid rich dividends as India ended their 11-year ICC title drought with a victorious run in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Rohit was also India’s top-scorer and top six-hitter in the 2024 T20 World Cup campaign with 257 runs and 15 sixes. With 4,231 runs and five centuries in T20Is, Rohit is the highest run-getter and has the joint-highest tally of centuries in the shorter format.

Suryakumar Yadav | 139 sixes

The swashbuckling Suryakumar Yadav is second on the list with 139 sixes from just 69 innings, averaging more than two sixes per innings. Suryakumar is now known as the Indian 360-degree batter thanks to his ability to score runs all over the park by manipulating the field.

Suryakumar has this uncanny ability to tap areas behind the wicket for scoring maximums and always tends to play with the field settings, making it difficult for any opposition captain or bowler to set the fields or bowl to him.

He has four hundreds to his name in T20Is and has an astonishing average of 42.43 as well as a strike rate of 169.02 in the T20 format.

Virat Kohli | 124 sixes

Virat Kohli is third on the list for most sixes by an Indian batter with 124 sixes from 117 innings. He was the most consistent player in the shortest format for India, boasting an average of 48.69 - the highest for any Indian player with a tally of more than 1,000 runs in T20Is.

Kohli amassed 4,188 runs in T20Is at a strike rate of 137.04 with 39 scores of 50 or above out of his 117 visits to the crease.

He was also part of the Indian team that won the T20 World Cup in Barbados in June 2024 and scored a crucial half-century in the final against South Africa.

Pacer Mayank Yadav, who impressed for Team Lucknow in the Indian T20 League 2024, has received his maiden India call-up.

All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and young fast bowler Harshit Rana are the other uncapped players included in the squad.

Mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy and wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma have also made a comeback in India’s T20I squad for the upcoming three-match series.

In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh will lead the pace bowling attack.

Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube are the other fast bowling all-rounders added in the squad.

In the spin bowling department, Ravi Bishnoi, Washington Sundar, all-rounders Riyan Parag and Abhishek Sharma could play a key role.

India last featured in a three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, which they won 3-0 in Pallekele in July.

On the other hand, the Bangladesh cricket team will aim to bounce back after succumbing to a 0-2 series defeat in the recently-concluded two-match Test series against India in the ongoing World Test Championship.

The visitors will be led by captain Najmul Hossain Shanto in the forthcoming T20I series.

All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz has returned to Bangladesh's T20I squad after 14 months.

Apart from Mehidy Hasan Miraz, opening batter Parvez Hossain Emon and left-arm spinner Rakibul Hasan have been recalled to the T20I squad.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh will miss the services of their star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who has retired from T20 international cricket.

The likes of left-handed batter Soumya Sarkar and left-arm spinner Tanvir Ahmed, who were part of Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad, have been dropped for the T20I series in India.

The Indian cricket team ended their 11-year wait for an ICC trophy after they won the T20 World Cup 2024 under Rohit Sharma held in the United States and the West Indies.

Apart from clinching the T20 World Cup 2024, the Indian cricket team has been impressive across all formats in 2024.

Rohit Sharma’s men defeated England 4-1 in a five-match Test series at home in March.

The Men in Blue also thrashed Afghanistan 3-0 in a three-match T20I series in India in January.

Under the leadership of young captain Shubman Gill, India secured a 4-1 T20I series win in Zimbabwe in July.

Led by newly-appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir and new T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, India beat Sri Lanka 3-0 in a three-match series away from home.

However, India then succumbed to a disappointing 0-2 ODI series defeat against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka.

Following the conclusion of the Sri Lanka series, the Indian cricket team will get a much-needed break ahead of a packed schedule.

India will host Bangladesh for two Tests and three T20Is in September. The India cricket team schedule 2024 also includes the highly-anticipated Test series against New Zealand in October and later versus Australia Down Under in November.

As of now, India will not play anymore ODI matches in 2024. Get India cricket team schedule 2024: Know when Men in Blue will play their next match.

Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed as the captain of the Indian cricket team for the T20I series against Sri Lanka which is scheduled to start on July 27, 2024. Suryakumar succeeds the outgoing skipper Rohit Sharma, who led India to the T20 World Cup title in 2024.

Suryakumar Yadav has led India in seven T20 internationals in the Australia and South Africa series during November-December 2023.

Captaincy aside, Suryakumar, who is ranked second on the list of top batters in men’s T20I cricket, has been a revelation in T20s with his innovative and effective shot-making all around the park.

With over 2,000 runs in T20Is, including four hundreds, at an average of 43.33 and an impressive strike rate of 167.74, the 33-year-old is an experienced campaigner in the shortest format.

Apart from his short stint as captain of the Indian T20 team, Suryakumar has been in charge of Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the premier domestic T20 competition in India. He also captained Team Mumbai in a solitary game in the Indian T20 League in 2023.

Let us have a detailed look at Suryakumar Yadav captaincy record.

Suryakumar Yadav captaincy record

Suryakumar made his captaincy debut for India in T20Is in the five-match series against Australia in November 2023. He had a dream start to his captaincy career as India won the first T20I by two wickets. The Mumbai batter was awarded the Player of the Match as he top-scored for India.

India won the series against Australia by an emphatic margin of 4-1 with Suryakumar finishing as the second-highest run-getter in the series.

Suryakumar also led India in the T20I series against South Africa with the three-match series being tied at 1-1 and a game being abandoned. He once again played a pivotal role in India’s win top-scoring in the contest with a 56-ball 100.

Suryakumar was adjudged the Player of the Match for his hundred in the third T20I. He also won the Player of the Series award as he finished as the top-scorer in the series.

Overall, Suryakumar has led India in seven T20Is winning five and losing two. He has scored 300 runs from seven innings at an average of 42.86 and a strike rate of 164.84.

The T20I format requires batters to score at a quicker rate compared to ODIs and Tests, where they can take their time to settle in before accelerating.

Ever since Chris Gayle became the first player to hit a T20I ton during the 2007 World Cup, more than 50 odd cricketers have gone on to achieve a similar feat, with some of them managing to breach the three-figure mark at an astonishing pace.

Three players jointly hold the record for the fastest century in T20Is, scored in 35 balls. Rohit Sharma is one of them and consequently holds the record for the fastest century for India in T20Is.

Rohit Sharma - 35 balls vs Sri Lanka

An exquisite timer of the ball, Rohit Sharma smashed a scintillating 43-ball 118 against Sri Lanka in December 2017, reaching the 100-run mark in just 35 balls

The Hitman, who also features among the players with the most runs in T20Is, etched his name in the history books by scoring the fastest century for India in T20Is.

The right-handed batter, who has scored the most centuries in T20I cricket, hit 12 fours and 10 sixes on a memorable night as India emerged victorious by 88 runs.

Suryakumar Yadav - 45 balls vs Sri Lanka

Suryakumar Yadav has been a revelation ever since making his international debut against England in March 2021.

Having finished 2022 as the leading run-scorer in T20Is, the swashbuckling batter continued his terrific form with a 45-ball century in the final T20I of the Sri Lanka tour of India 2023, breaking multiple records en route to his 51-ball 112*.

After tons against England (July 2022) and New Zealand (November 2022), the century against Sri Lanka made him the first non-opening batter to score three 100-plus scores in T20Is.

Moreover, all three centuries were scored in under 50 balls with SKY striking at 200-plus.

KL Rahul - 46 balls vs West Indies

One of the only two centuries scored by KL Rahul in the shortest format of the game makes it to the list of fastest centuries for India in T20Is. He touched the 100-run mark in 46 balls against the Windies in August 2016 at Lauderhill, USA.

Chasing a daunting target of 246, India lost the match by just one run.
