International cricket returned in thrilling fashion last week with West Indies beating hosts England by four wickets in the first match following the global pandemic-enforced lockdown. The win meant that West Indies went 1-0 up in a Test series in England for the first time since 2000.

As we head to Manchester for the second Test of the series, you can rest assured that the English will come guns blazing in their bid to tie the series ahead of the final Test. Here, we have a look at a couple of potential difference-makers who will be looking to stand up and be counted for their respective teams.

Joe Root

The likely return of skipper Joe Root to England’s batting line-up after the birth of his second child comes as a much-needed boost for the Three Lions. He will most likely replace Joe Denly in the batting lineup since Zak Crawley and the rest of England’s batsmen gave a good account of themselves in the first Test. Root’s addition will bring an added sense of security, calmness and consistency to England’s middle order. Root, in fact, is the highest run-scorer in Tests, with 2039 runs, including four hundreds and 13 half-centuries in matches since 2018. The England skipper will be keen to lead from the front as his team looks to level the series in the second Test.

Ben Stokes

Captain in the first Test, Ben Stokes was England’s best batsman, with 40s in both innings. However, he will want to capitalise on his starts in the second Test and looks primed to do just that with the added burden of captaincy no longer a worry for him in Manchester. Besides his runs with the bat, Stokes also showed how sharp he can be with the ball and will be hoping to exploit the conditions in Manchester. The last Test saw him become the sixth player to reach the Test double of 4000 runs and 150 wickets in the longest format of the game. The hard-hitting all-rounder is known for his game-changing ability and how West Indies contain him could be a pivotal factor when it comes to deciding the outcome of the contest.

Jermaine Blackwood

Jermaine Blackwood announced his return to the West Indies setup with a match-winning 95 in the second innings of the first Test. The top run-getter in the West Indies Championships ?a four-day tournament ?before the pandemic halted proceedings, Blackwood looks to have carried his form with him to England. He will be determined to build on his comeback to the Test side following a two-and-a-half-year spell away from the team. The right-hand batsman will also be eager to make amends with a big knock after falling five runs short of a Test century in the previous match. He scored his maiden ton against England in 2015 and will be hoping that he doesn’t have to wait for much longer for a second.

Shannon Gabriel

Man of the Match in the last Test after taking four wickets in the first innings and five in the second, Shannon Gabriel demonstrated his return to full fitness in style with a nine-wicket haul. Even though he was a late inclusion in the Test squad due to injury, Gabriel managed to rattle the English batsmen more than any other bowler from his team and produced a game-changing spell on Day 4, when it looked like England were slight favourites. He will be in a confident frame of mind heading into the second Test in Manchester and will want to replicate, if not better his performance from the first Test.

West Indies captain Jason Holder praised the "massive, massive heart" of Shannon Gabriel following the tourists' four-wicket win in the first Test against England at Southampton on Sunday.

Fast bowler Gabriel was named Man of the Match after taking combined figures of nine wickets for 137 runs as international cricket returned from lockdown.

The 32-year-old Trinidad quick was originally only named as a travelling reserve as he recovered from ankle surgery.

But he proved his fitness in two intra-squad warm-up matches and then showed his class as West Indies went 1-0 up in this three-match series.

Gabriel now boasts a fine career record of 142 wickets in 46 Tests at an average of under 30, with Holder telling reporters after stumps: "What Shannon has done in this game is nothing surprising.

"Shannon is just one of those guys who keep doing it. He has a massive, massive heart and he's been through a lot.

"He wants success so badly. His body hasn't held up the way he would like but to see him back out there fit and well and bowling fast for the West Indies is always a pleasing sight.

"He deserves every bit of success he's had in this game. I'm really, really happy for Shannon, I know what he's been through.

"We kept in contact while he was doing rehab. At some stages, he was very frustrated by how things were going but he stuck through it," added all-rounder Holder, who himself took a Test-best 6-42 in England's lowly first-innings 204.

"We all know when Shannon is fit and healthy, he is a handful and he proved it in this game."

For all Gabriel's heroics, the West Indies still needed to bat well after being set a target of 200 to win on Sunday's final day.

'No slouch' Blackwood

They got there largely thanks to Jermaine Blackwood's 95.

Blackwood might not have played had fellow batsmen Darren Bravo and Shimron Hetmyer decided to tour rather than opting out of a campaign taking place against the backdrop of the global pandemic.

Holder said of Blackwood: "He had an outstanding first-class competition -- his case to get back in the team was pretty strong.

"He's not a slouch at this level either, he has done well for us and I hope he can kick on."

England stand-in skipper Ben Stokes said he had no regrets over either leaving out veteran paceman Stuart Broad or deciding to bat first in overcast, bowler-friendly, conditions on Wednesday.

Broad, England's second-most successful Test bowler of all time, revealed how "frustrated, gutted and angry" he felt at being left out of a home Test for the first time in eight years during a mid-match interview.

"We made a decision based around thinking pace was going to stand us a better place in the long game. Stuart is a fantastic bowler and he understands the reasons why," said Stokes.

"If I was to regret that, I don't think that sends the right message to the other guys I picked.

"Looking at the interview he gave, I thought it was absolutely brilliant, to see the desire and passion that he showed."

Stokes said he was looking forward to handing the reins over to regular captain Joe Root for next week's second Test after the star batsman missed this match following the birth of his second child.

"He's one of the best players in the world, so he is a big miss when he doesn't play -- and obviously next week I don't need to make any of the decisions, so good luck Joe."

West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel took two England wickets in quick succession to leave the tourists on top on the second day of the first Test at Southampton on Thursday.

Gabriel removed Joe Denly and Rory Burns in a spell of two wickets for two runs in nine balls as England slumped to 51 for 3.

After a rain-marred first day more memorable for the sight of players taking a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter campaign and the West Indies' rekindling the powerful imagery of clenched fists in black gloves, England resumed on 35-1.

Recalled opener Burns was 20 not out and Denly 14 not out, with another overcast morning at Hampshire's headquarters making conditions difficult for the batsmen.

With regular England skipper and top-order mainstay Joe Root expected to return for the second Test after missing this match to attend the birth of his second child, Denly was under pressure to make a big score to keep him in the side.

But Denly, averaging a modest 30 from 14 previous Tests, had added just four runs to his overnight score when he was bowled by a 90mph nip-backer from Gabriel to leave him flat-footed on the crease.

Left-hander Burns followed soon afterwards, leg before wicket for 30 after going across his crease to a Gabriel delivery that thudded into his pads.

West Indies, however, had to review an original not out decision from Richard Kettleborough.

Gabriel had now taken all three England wickets after removing Dom Sibley for a duck on Wednesday following stand-in England captain Ben Stokes' decision to bat first.

West Indies have not won a Test series in England since 1988 but they hold the Wisden Trophy after a 2-1 success in the Caribbean last year.

West Indies are set to field their latest fast-bowling quartet during this week's first Test against England in Southampton, with the likes of Shannon Gabriel, Kemar Roach, captain Jason Holder and Alzarri Joseph all vying to make an impact.

The Caribbean has a long and proud history of producing top-class fast bowlers.

We look back at some previous West Indies pace attacks in England:

1980: Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Joel Garner, Colin Croft

-- The original 'fearsome foursome' revolutionised world cricket under the captaincy of Clive Lloyd by ensuring there was no respite for batsmen even when the shine had gone off the ball.

Although all capable of being genuinely quick, the guile of Roberts, the speed through the air of Holding, the steepling bounce and crushing yorkers of the 6ft 8in Garner and the awkwardness of Croft, from wide of the crease or around the wicket, meant they each posed different problems for batsmen.

Meanwhile this series also saw Malcolm Marshall, arguably the greatest West Indies fast bowler of them all, start to establish himself in the side.

Even so, the West Indies only won the series 1-0, with Roberts taking eight wickets in a two-wicket win in the opener at Trent Bridge before the other four matches were all drawn largely due to weather interruptions.

1984: Marshall, Garner, Holding, Eldine Baptiste

-- The 'Blackwash' team hammered England 5-0. The writing was on the wall for the hosts when Marshall struck debutant Andy Lloyd on the head with a bouncer in the series opener, with the batsman never playing another Test.

Marshall's mastery was evident when he took seven for 53 in the third Test at Headingley despite a broken thumb an he finished the series with 24 wickets at 18.20 despite missing a match through injury. Barbados team-mate Garner took 29 wickets at 18.62.

1988: Marshall, Curtly Ambrose, Courtney Walsh, Winston Benjamin/Patrick Patterson

-- West Indies won 4-0 in a series where England's disarray was summed up by the fact they got through four captains.

Marshall, capable of both sheer pace and late movement, led the way with 35 wickets at a staggeringly low average of 12.65 apiece, with Ambrose -- soon to become the leader of the attack -- and Walsh offering excellent support.

1995: Ambrose, Walsh, Kenny Benjamin, Ian Bishop

-- With the likes of batting greats Gordon Greenidge and Vivian Richards having now both retired, the West Indies found themselves held to a 2-2 draw in a six-Test series.

But all four frontline bowlers still took more than 21 wickets each.

Nevertheless there were signs the West Indies were not the force they had been and in 2000 England beat them in a series for the first time in 31 years.

Shannon Gabriel's prospects of facing England in next week's series opener at Southampton increased after he was formally added to the West Indies Test squad on Thursday.

The experienced fast bowler was initially among the travelling reserves but has now been drafted into the 15-strong frontline squad after proving his fitness following ankle surgery with encouraging displays in the two intra-squad warm-up matches at Old Trafford.

"I am delighted that we are able to add Shannon to the Test squad," said West Indies lead selector Roger Harper.

"He has shown that he is fit and ready, he will add experience, firepower and potency to the bowling unit."

Gabriel has taken eight wickets at an average of just over 15 apiece in the warm-up matches

The 32-year-old is a seasoned Test campaigner, with 133 wickets in 45 matches since his debut at Lord's in 2012 and he helped the West Indies regain the Wisden Trophy during their 2-1 series win over England in the Caribbean last year.

Thursday saw the last day of the West Indies' second and final warm-up game, with coach Phil Simmons officially rejoining the team after his latest negative test.

West Indies captain Jason Holder tried to gain some time in the middle by promoting himself to open the batting for the side he was leading against a Kraigg Brathwaite XI.

But the all-rounder could only manage two off 15 deliveries, with Holder scoring just seven runs in the warm-up games.

There was better news for Gabriel, who took four for 42 as Brathwaite's XI were bowled out for 178 in a drawn encounter after resuming on 112 for seven.

Simmons had been self-isolating in his room at the team's on-site hotel at Old Trafford after leaving the bubble to attend his father-in-law's funeral.

He watched most of a rain-interrupted four-day game from his balcony but presided over the warm-ups on Thursday after his third negative test.

Before play, the squad marked the passing of outstanding West Indies batsman Everton Weekes, who died aged 95 on Wednesday, with a minute's silence and wore black armbands as a mark of respect

First-innings century-maker Joshua Da Silva picked up where he left off with 56 not out but it remains to be seen whether the reserve wicketkeeper can force his way into the side for the three-Test series.

West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel has no plans to alter his on-field approach against England, saying a previous flare-up with Joe Root was "blown way out of proportion".

Gabriel received a four-match ban after asking England captain Root "do you like boys?" during the third Test in St Lucia last year, with Root replying: "There's nothing wrong with being gay."

Homosexual activity remains illegal in Gabriel's native Trinidad.

Only Root's rebuke was picked up by the stump microphones during an England win that still meant the West Indies took the series 2-1.

But with next month's three-Test series in England being played behind closed doors in response to the coronavirus, the microphones could hear everything in the middle, given the lack of any crowd noise.

Gabriel, however, was keen to put the incident behind him.

"I don't really think about that too much, don't want to harp on about it," he told reporters in a conference call on Thursday.

"The way they dealt with it was blown way out of proportion. I just want to move on.

"No hard feelings, I've come here to play cricket, whether it's Joe Root or Ben Stokes or whoever, I'm going to do to the best of my ability to try to get them out, not like targeting one player."

The West Indies are quarantining and training at Old Trafford, the venue for the second and third Tests of a series that will start at Hampshire's Ageas Bowl on July 8.

Gabriel, however, does not believe the special circumstances of a "bio-secure" series will change players' on-field mentality.

"You can't get away from a little personal banter as long as it stays within the rules of the game and it's not disrespectful. I don't think much will change," he said.

The 32-year-old, a veteran of 45 Tests, added: "When you step on the field you are playing for your country and if you are not going out there to give 100 percent, I don't think you should be out there."

Tactically too, Gabriel does not see a need for West Indies to change after their pace attack often proved too much for England in 2019.

"I don't think the plan will shift too much from when we were in the Caribbean -- we shouldn't be fixing anything that was not broken," he said.

Both Root and Gabriel could miss the series opener, with the England skipper waiting for his wife to give birth to his second child.

Gabriel is trying to overcome a left ankle injury that meant he was officially chosen as one of 11 travelling reserves rather than as a member of the 14-strong Test squad itself.

But ahead of next week's West Indies practice match, Gabriel reckoned he was "85-90 percent fit".

The West Indies are showing signs that they are developing a pace attack that could stand comparison with the great Caribbean sides of the past, assistant coach Roddy Estwick said on Monday.

The West Indies were world cricket's dominant team from the mid-1970s to the 1990s when they could call on a succession of superb fast bowlers including Michael Holding, Malcolm Marshall, Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh.

Their quicks also played a key role when the West Indies beat England 2-1 in the Caribbean last year.

Kemar Roach, Shannon Gabriel, Alzarri Joseph and captain Jason Holder are all in the Caribbean tour party for the Test series in England.

The squad are quarantining in Manchester because of the global pandemic as they prepare for the three-match series, which starts next month.

Estwick said the West Indies were 'beginning to get blessed with fast bowlers again' but urged against premature comparisons with earlier generations.

"We've got four fast bowlers we think can challenge any team in the world," he said in a conference call.

"I don't know about living up to the greats, they've got to forge their own identity."

"We've (also) got a group of youngsters coming through," he added, citing Chemar Holder and Oshane Thomas.

Estwick, a former Barbados paceman, said the new crop of were showing the stamina displayed by previous generations.

"What we've done is improve our fitness," he said. "Now you can sustain pressure. If you look back at the eighties, that's one thing the fast bowlers had."

The West Indies also had formidable strength in depth in their golden era.

"When I played first-class cricket in the 80s, we had six outstanding fast bowlers," recalled Estwick.

Read | West Indies to debate taking the knee, says captain Holder

"But the likes of Wayne Daniel and Sylvester Clarke only played 10 and 11 Tests and yet they both had about 900 first-class wickets each."

Next month's series will be played behind closed doors as a precaution against the global pandemic but Estwick said England new-ball veterans Stuart Broad and James Anderson would be just as dangerous without home support.

"The '12th man' isn't going to be there but I don't think experienced bowlers like Broad and Anderson will be too fazed by the crowd not being there," he said.

Estwick said there had been some benefits to the quarantine restrictions.

"It's a different situation but we've spent a bit more time as a group together. The spirit has been good. We've got no complaints with the way things have gone so far. The excuses stop now."

West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel has come clean over the verbal altercation with England's Joe Root, tendering an 'unreserved apology' to the batsman for his alleged homosexual comments.

In the third Test match between West Indies and England, stump mics picked up Joe Root saying to Gabriel," there's nothing wrong with being gay" in response to something said by the pacer. Gabriel revealed that in the spur of the moment, he has passed a vulgar comment to Root saying "Why are you smiling at me? Do you like boys?''

"To my team-mates and members of the England team, especially their captain Joe Root, I extend an unreserved apology for a comment which in the context of on-the-field rivalry, I assumed was inoffensive and sporting banter," Gabriel said "I know now that it was offensive and for that, I am deeply sorry.

"The exchange was on and England's captain Joe Root was looking at me intensely as I prepared to bowl, which may have been the unusual psychological strategy with which all Test cricketers are familiar."

The fast bowler was fined 75% of his match fee and given a four-match ban by the International Cricket Council (ICC) which means he will miss the first four ODIs of the impending series against England.

West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel was Wednesday suspended for four one-day internationals after breaching the International Cricket Council's code of conduct over comments made to England's Joe Root.

Gabriel has been fined 75 per cent of his match fee for the incident during the third Test in St Lucia and handed three demerit points, taking his total to eight within a 24-month period.

The nature of the paceman's words is not known but England captain Root was picked up on stump microphones telling Gabriel: "Don't use it as an insult. There's nothing wrong with being gay."

A statement from the ICC said: "During the third day of the St Lucia Test against England on Monday, Gabriel was found guilty of breaching article 2.13 of the ICC code of conduct... which relates to "personal abuse of a player, player Support personnel, umpire or match referee during an international match", following an incident with Root.

"Gabriel admitted the offence after the end of the match on Tuesday and accepted the sanction."

West Indies won the Test series against England 2-1.

Root received praise for his response to Gabriel, made in the process of compiling a century, with fellow sportsmen, politicians and LGBT equality charity Stonewall all applauding his stance.

Gabriel, 30, already had five demerit points against his name for two earlier incidents. With the addition of the latest three demerit points, he has reached the threshold of eight demerit points, converted into four suspension points.

Four suspension points equate to a ban from two Tests or four ODIs/Twenty20 internationals, whichever come first for the player.

Gabriel was in November suspended from a Test in Bangladesh when he reached the threshold of four demerit points.

The five-match one-day series starts in Barbados on February 20.

West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel was charged with a breach of conduct by the ICC on Tuesday after allegedly making a homophobic remark in an exchange with England captain Joe Root during the third Test.

Stump microphones picked up an interaction on the third day in St Lucia between Gabriel and Root, in which the latter responded: "Don't use it as an insult. There's nothing wrong with being gay."

The ICC, cricket's governing body, said Gabriel had been charged with a breach of its code of conduct in relation to the "personal abuse" of a player, umpire or match referee.

"The charge, which was laid by match umpires, will now be dealt with by Match Referee Jeff Crowe. Until the proceedings have concluded, the ICC will not comment further," it said in a tweet.

Root refused to reveal what Gabriel said to him when asked by reporters.
