Many believe in superstitions and lucky charms, and cricket’s biggest names are no exception. From strange habits to lucky items, discover the quirky beliefs some of the greatest cricket stars follow for good luck on the pitch.

Sachin Tendulkar’s left pad

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in history, had a unique pre-match ritual: he always put on his left leg pad first before walking onto the field.

It might seem like a harmless quirk to normal eyes, but for Tendulkar, it was part of a deeply ingrained routine. He has often downplayed this as a ‘habitâ€?rather than a superstition.

Steve Waugh’s red handkerchief

One of the sport’s most respected players, Australian cricketer Steve Waugh, had a small, deeply personal superstition: he carried a red handkerchief during matches. This handkerchief was a gift from his grandmother, and it holds sentimental value to him.

As years passed, it became more than a keepsake and became his lucky charm. For Waugh, the handkerchief likely provided comfort and a psychological boost, reminding him of family and grounding him during high-pressure moments.

Neil McKenzie’s strange rituals

South African cricket star Neil McKenzie is a well-known batsman but had his fair share of strange rituals before a game. In the dressing room, he ensures that all the toilet lids are closed.

Another one is rooted in a prank made by his teammate, where they taped his cricket bat to the ceiling. In the next game, he hit a century. After that, he taped his bat to the ceiling before every big game.

Jack Russell’s hat

Former English wicketkeeper Jack Russell is known for his ‘eccentricityâ€?and fun ways of keeping himself in tip-top shape every match. One of these ways is wearing the same hat every game for decades.

He insisted on wearing the cricket hat and even threatened not to play in the 1996 World Cup if he was not allowed to wear it. The management gave up and let him as long as the Three Lions are stitched to it. At one point, it caught fire when he was drying it in the oven, but it survived and lived to see more games.

Rohit Sharma’s routine

The top-notch batsman of India, Rohit Sharma, is known for his impressive and elegant batting style and pre-game routines. Before a match, he ensures that he finishes a good cup of coffee. After that, he calls his wife to say ‘hiâ€?to relieve the pent-up pressure of the upcoming game.

Upon stepping on the pitch, he makes sure his right foot lands first and then hits a few balls before the match starts. Once he’s in, he focuses on a single spot in the stadium and keeps his gaze fixed on it to help maintain focus when under pressure.

Sunil Gavaskar’s dressing room seat

Sunil Gavaskar is a cricket legend of the Indian local scene, and even he is not safe from superstitions. He once said in an interview that he has a permanent seat in their team dressing room where he sits for a long time before a game. After his retirement, he went there again to check it and found it was a designated spot for the 12th man.

He is also known for putting his left pad and shoe first before the right ones, believing it brings him good luck.

Virender Sehwag’s jersey

India’s most fearless and entertaining opener, Virender Sehwag, is famous for wearing a jersey with no number. Initially, he had the number 4,but his mother believed it was unlucky and asked him to change it. His wife also told him to change to number ./p>

To avoid discord, he chose to wear a jersey with no number on it. It had problems with the local council, but they accepted it after hearing his explanation. He continued to wear the no-number jersey throughout his career.

Exploring the world of cricket superstitions

Cricket is a high-pressure sport that requires focus, so to relieve it, a lot of them have superstitions and habits before the game starts—and sure enough, cricket superstars also do the same. These can range from wearing a specific piece of gear to stepping onto the field in a particular way.

Cricket legends often make the game look effortless. Balls fly to the boundary, sixes sail into the stands, and the crowd is amazed. While skill and dedication are at the heart of these performances, one key factor quietly plays its role—the bat. A cricketer’s bat isn’t just a piece of equipment; it’s a trusted partner. Let's explore nine legendary players and the bats they swore by.

Sachin Tendulkar - MRF Genius Grand Edition

Sachin used the MRF Genius Grand Edition, which is made from top English willow. Its balance and thick edges helped him score over 34,000 runs with control and precision.

Sir Donald Bradman - Gray-Nicolls Sykes

Bradman used the Gray-Nicolls Sykes, a light, well-balanced bat that suited his skill. With an average of 99.94, the Australian legend made it a symbol of cricketing greatness.

Ricky Ponting Kookaburra Kahuna

Ponting used the Kookaburra Kahuna, known for its light pickup and top-grade willow. He scored over 27,000 runs with it and even helped shape its design, showing how top players know what works.

Brian Lara Spartan CG Authority

Lara, all flair and fearlessness, used the Spartan CG Authority—built for power and touch. Some say he used MRF earlier, but whatever the bat, he made it shine.

Rahul Dravid SS Gladiator

Dravid, ‘The Wall, used the SS Gladiator, which gave him the control and balance needed for his calm, defensive style. With over 24,000 first-class runs, his bat helped him stay solid against the fiercest bowling attacks.

Jacques Kallis Gray-Nicolls Legend

Kallis used the Gray-Nicolls Legend, built from premium willow, which helped him rack up runs with quiet authority. With a remarkable average of 55.37, this bat was a perfect match for one of cricket’s most dependable all-rounders.

Kevin Pietersen Adidas Pellara

Pietersen’s Adidas Pellara suited his bold, front-foot style. With a light pickup and extended sweet spot, it was made for big shots. Pietersen’s endorsement also helped Adidas make a splash in cricket gear.

Kane Williamson Gray-Nicolls Kaboom

Williamson, known for staying calm under pressure, was linked with the Gray-Nicolls Kaboom. His choice of bat focuses on power and precision. The batter’s high scores show how well this brand supports his tidy technique.

Steve Smith Kookaburra Ghost

Smith’s quirky style needed a bat to keep up, and the Kookaburra Ghost did just that. Light yet powerful, it complemented his unorthodox but effective approach. Like many Aussies, Smith favoured Kookaburra’s balance and feel.

More than just willow

These bats weren’t just tools; they were trusted allies. Each bat echoed the player’s personality, style, and strategy. Together, talent, practice, and the perfect bat helped these legends leave their mark on cricket history.

The County Ground, Bristol is a picturesque cricket venue located in Bristol, England.

Formerly known as Ashley Down Ground, the County Ground, Bristol was bought by WG Grace in 1889 and has been home to Gloucestershire ever since.

The County Ground, Bristol was later sold to local confectionery firm J. S. Fry & Sons and renamed Fry's Ground. The county bought the ground back in 1933 and it reverted to its original name.

In 1976, the ground was once again sold to Royal & Sun Alliance, who renamed the ground the Phoenix County Ground for eight years before changing to The Royal & Sun Alliance County Ground until the ground was again bought by the club and renamed to its current title.

The County Ground, Bristol staged its first international cricket match, a One-Day International (ODI) played between New Zealand and Sri Lanka during the Prudential World Cup in June 1983. Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for the most runs in Test, having scored 15,921 runs in a record 200 Tests.

The legendary cricketer, who made his Test debut in 1989 against Pakistan, slammed 51 centuries and 68 fifties in his 24-year career and holds a multitude of records, one being most centuries in the longest format.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting comes in second on the list for most runs in Test. The most successful ODI captain of all time, Ponting hit 13,378 runs in 168 matches and is the only player to finish with most Test runs in a calendar year twice.

The India vs South Africa cricket rivalry is one of the most enthralling rivalries in modern-day cricket.

An India vs South Africa cricket match is one of the most-awaited fixtures in the cricketing calendar, be it home or away or any format of the game.

India was the first team to invite South Africa for a three-match One-Day International series in November 1991 after the apartheid policy had kept them out of international cricket for more than 20 years.

That was the first meeting between the sides with India winning the series 2-1. From then on, both India and South Africa have been part of some exciting duels in Tests, ODIs and T20Is.

India and South Africa have met each other at the international stage on 164 occasions with South Africa being victorious 80 times and India winning 70 matches. There have been 10 draws with four matches ending without a result.

South Africa are marginally ahead in the race in the longest format of the game with 18 wins compared to India’s 16. A total of 10 matches out of the total 44 have ended in draws.

Incidentally, the rainbow nation remains the final frontier for the Men in Blue as they are yet to win a Test series in South Africa. The last series in December-January 2023-24 in South Africa ended in a draw with both teams winning one Test each.

In ODIs too, South Africa hold a superior record with 51 wins from 94 matches. India have won 40 ODIs with three of them getting abandoned without a result. Sachin Tendulkar created history by becoming the first player to score a double-hundred in ODI cricket, in a contest against South Africa at Gwalior in 2010.

Coming to the shortest format of the game, India holds the edge in T20Is with 14 victories from 26 matches. South Africa follow closely with 11 wins and a game being abandoned.

With that being said, let’s have a look at India vs South Africa head-to-head in cricket.
