Having weighed it up for days, Bruno Fernandes decided not to join Saudi Arabia’s top league team, Al-Hilal. After discussing this with his family, they chose not to leave Manchester United. Even though the salary was rumoured to be ‘doubleâ€?of his current one, he still decided not to transfer. 

Manchester United’s head coach, Ruben Amorim, asked the captain not to leave the team. Fernandes stated ‘They said if I wanted to go I could, but they didn't need the money. I spoke to coach Ruben Amorim who, throughout that period, he was pushing for me not to go.�nbsp;

‘For better or worse, this is how I see football and I'm passionate about football and this is the decision I've made,â€?he added. 

With this decision, the loyal captain will surely gain more fans. By rejecting an ‘exciting offerâ€?that would change his career trajectory and staying with Manchester United, even though they are at their ‘worstâ€? his loyalty will not remain unseen.

Former United midfielder and now pundit Roy Keane saw the struggle and didn’t hold back. After the Newcastle game, he slammed the club, stating that they are ‘physically and mentally a weak team� He wasn’t alone, though, as many fans and ex-players have echoed the same frustration. United's former captain, Gary Neville, even called out the club’s lack of quality in their games.

Amorim on the edge; are hopes still alive?

To Amorim’s credit, there has been hope. Wins over Ipswich Town, Leicester City, and a few more in cup games showed glimpses of what the team could have become. The coach’s system has shown moments of clarity and structure.

Sadly, these are rare moments. Inconsistency brings down Amorim’s reign at the moment. Critics shared that his 3-4-3 formation system doesn’t suit United, which only adds to their unimpressive results. After matches, Amorim’s frustrations have been evident. He’s pointed out individual mistakes and the lack of focus, hinting at growing tension within the club.

The team needs to save itself

United’s dull performance this season can’t be pinned on one man. Amorim has shown intent and desire to shift the club’s path, but even someone as sharp as him can’t fix a broken system alone.

Right now, the club has lost 14 of its 32 matches. Their next match is set against Wolves on Sunday, April 20. If players don’t make any moves, results will keep slipping, and the team will keep sinking.

Manchester United is set for a major squad overhaul under manager Ruben Amorim, with at least 10 players to leave this summer. The club is looking to raise funds for new signings after a disappointing season. Ruben eyes to get Sporting CP's Francisco Trincão on the team.

Ruben Amorim responded to Wayne Rooney after Manchester United was eliminated from the FA Cup on March 2, 2025. He argued that being Man Utd’s head coach at 40 shows he is not naive. Rooney, Man Utd's all-time top scorer, called Amorim naive for stating that the team's goal is to win the Premier League after their loss to Fulham in penalties.

‘That is the goal. Being naive is to think we are going to do it this season or be the best contender next season. So I know that at this moment everybody knows everything. I know that and it’s really easy �I was a pundit when I finished my career. I know it’s really easy� Amorim said when asked about Rooney’s comments.

Amorim shared that the club’s main goal is to win the Premier League, though he noted that it might not happen under his coaching. He mentioned the club's desire to replicate past successes and acknowledged the tough times. 

Meanwhile, Rooney, a former Man Utd scorer and now a pundit, suggested that it seems unrealistic to claim they are aiming for the Premier League title, given their current position.

‘Sometimes you want Bruno (Fernandes) to reach the ball in the build-up because he's really good switching the play. But then you want Bruno also to press and it's really hard. And when you are changing all the time to get the players to react to the base, it's really hard.�Amorim added.

Amorim has his hands full but hopes that the team can regain themselves in the FA Cup and the Europa League.
