The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024 began on February 17 and ended on March 18.

As many as six teams were competing in a total of 34 matches across four weeks in the ninth edition of the PSL.

Some of the leading T20 batters including the likes of Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Rilee Rossouw, Reeza Hendricks, Dawid Malan, Alex Hales and Rovman Powell were featuring in Pakistan’s premier T20 League.

Young batter Sahibzada Farhan slammed the first fifty of PSL 2024. Representing Lahore Qalandars, Sahibzada Farhan scored 57 off 36 balls against Islamabad United in the opening match of the T20 tournament at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. 

Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam also started his PSL 2024 campaign on a good note. Peshawar Zalmi captain Babar Azam led from the front as he scored an impressive half-century (68 off 42 balls) against Quetta Gladiators.

The likes of Reeza Hendricks, Jason Roy, Saud Shakeel, Rassie van der Dussen and Shadab Khan have also produced some scintillating batting performances for their respective franchises in PSL 9.

Multan Sultans captain Mohammad Rizwan finished with the most runs in PSL 2023. The flamboyant wicketkeeper-batter scored 550 runs in 12 matches at an average of 55 and a strike rate of 142.85. 

Former Pakistan cricket team captain Babar Azam holds the record for the most runs in PSL history. Since the inception of the T20 tournament in 2016, Azam has scored 3,003 runs in 80 matches with one century and 29 fifties to his name.

Lahore Qalandars�Fakhar Zaman features second on the list with 2,381 runs in 77 matches between 2017 and 2024.

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) has not been the easiest of places for batters to score runs. However, some of the country’s top senior and upcoming batters have managed to overcome this difficulty by scoring aplenty in the tournament over the years. 

Pakistan’s national team skipper Babar Azam is the leading run-scorer in PSL history. He became the first batter to surpass 2,000 runs and has a healthy lead at the top of this table. Former Pakistani keeper Kamran Akmal, opener Fakhar Zaman and veteran all-rounders Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez are the others in the top run-scorers in PSL. 

Among overseas batters, South African T20 specialist Rilee Rossouw, Australian all-rounder Shane Watson and Kiwi keeper-batter Luke Ronchi have scored over 1,000 runs in the Pakistan Super League.

Babar Azam (Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Peshawar Zalmi)

After representing Islamabad United in 2016, Babar Azam was with Karachi Kings from 2017 to 2022. He was the leading run-scorer (473 runs) and Player of the Tournament in the 2020 PSL edition when the Kings won their first title. They finished 2021 as the top run-scorer as well with 554 runs and the Lahore-born batter joined Peshawar Zalmi from 2023.

Fakhar Zaman (Lahore Qalandars)

Fakhar Zaman’s terrific season with the bat ended Lahore Qalandars�PSL title quest in 2022. He scored a whopping 588 runs in 13 matches at an average of 45.23 and a whopping strike rate of 152.72, which includes seven half-centuries and one century. Beginning from the 2017 edition, where he scored 177 runs, he has been the Qalandars�top run-scorer in most of their seasons since.

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024 started on February 17 and will run till March 18.

Organised by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the ninth edition of the PSL will see six teams compete in a total of 34 T20 matches across four venues. 

Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Multan Sultans, Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators are the teams competing for the PSL 2024 title.

As per the PSL 2024 schedule, each team will play the other five sides twice in a double round-robin format. The top four teams in the standings after all the league matches will qualify for the playoffs.

The top two teams in the standings will lock horns in the Qualifier 1 for a place in the final.

The third and fourth-placed teams will clash in Eliminator 1 to advance to Eliminator 2.

The winner of Eliminator 1 will face the loser of Qualifier 1 in Eliminator 2 for the other spot in the final.

The PSL 2024 final will be held in Karachi on March 18.

National Stadium in Karachi, Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, Multan Cricket Stadium and Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium are the venues that will host PSL 2024 matches.

Lahore Qalandars are the defending PSL champions after beating Multan Sultans by one run in a thrilling 2023 final. They are also the most successful team (2022, 2023) in PSL history with two titles alongside Islamabad United (2016, 2018).

Apart from Lahore Qalandars and Multan Sultans, the likes of Peshawar Zalmi (2017), Quetta Gladiators (2019), Karachi Kings (2020) and Multan Sultans (2021) have clinched the PSL title once each.

Meanwhile, Lahore Qalandars are the only team to successfully defend their PSL title in the history of the tournament.

PSL 2024 points table format

The PSL 2024 will follow a double round-robin format during the league phase.

Each team will get two points for a win and one for a tie. If two or more teams are tied on points, the Net Run Rate (NRR) will come into play with the side having a superior NRR getting positioned higher. Get the latest PSL 2024 points table and standings.

Pakistan Super League (PSL) has witnessed some terrific bowlers take the field over the years. Pakistan has always taken great pride in the bowling talents they have produced and PSL has been a wonderful stage for many of them, senior and junior, to further showcase and hone their skills. 

The Pakistan national cricket team boasts of a fantastic pace bowling battery and it comes as no surprise that the top three leading wicket-takers in this tournament’s history are fast bowlers. Veteran pacer Wahab Riaz is currently the leading wicket-taker in the Pakistan Super League and he was also the first to complete 100 scalps in the PSL.

Wahab Riaz (Peshawar Zalmi)

Wahab Riaz was drafted into Peshawar Zalmi for the inaugural PSL player draft and has played for them in every edition of the tournament since. During their title-winning campaign in 2017, he returned with 15 wickets in 10 matches, which was the second-best tally overall in that edition and the best for Zalmi. He finished as the joint-leading wicket-taker of the tournament in the following season.  

Hasan Ali (Islamabad United, Peshawar Zalmi)

Hasan Ali represented Peshawar Zalmi for the first five editions of the Pakistan Super League, before making a high-profile move to Islamabad United in 2021. Ali was an integral part of Zalmi’s title-winning side in 2017, returning with 12 wickets in 11 matches. Hasan Ali was also the leading wicket-taker of the 2019 edition, picking up 25 wickets. In his first season with Islamabad United, he picked up 13 wickets in 10 matches.  

Shaheen Afridi (Lahore Qalandars)

Shaheen Afridi has been a relentless wicket-taker for Lahore Qalandars since joining them in 2018. In 2022, he was made captain of the franchise and Afridi led the Qalandars to their first PSL title. He finished as the leading wicket-taker in the tournament twice so far, in 2020 (17 wickets) and 2022 (20 wickets).

The Pakistan Super League 2023 is well underway with some top bowlers showing signs of their potential early on. A good start to the season will set the tone for them for the rest of the tournament as they look to contribute to the team with the ball in hand.

The 2023 PSL season began with Lahore Qalandars facing off against last campaign’s runners-up Multan Sultans on the first day. The defending champions Lahore Qalandars won the season opener by a narrow margin of one run. 

Defending a target of 176, skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi spearheaded the Qalandars�bowling attack with a spell of 1/27, while the likes of Haris Rauf, Zaman Khan and  Hussain Talat chipped in with a scalp each to help Lahore register a win.

The second match of the season witnessed another close game with Peshawar Zalmi emerging victorious against Karachi Kings by two runs.

After setting a target of 200 for Karachi Kings to chase, Peshawar Zalmi’s bowlers came to the fore with the PSL all-time leading wicket-taker Wahab Riaz leading the way with figures of 2/34.

Riaz along with James Neesham and Salman Irshad were among the wickets for Zalmi as they picked up a narrow win. 

However, perhaps the best bowling performance in the early stages of the season came from youngster Ihsanullah of Multan Sultans. The seamer’s devastating bowling effort saw him finish with figures 5/12 against Quetta Gladiators, deservedly bagging the Player of the Match award.

The Gladiators were restricted to 110 and the Sultans chased down the target comfortably to pocket their first points in the PSL 2023 standings.

Some more familiar faces who are likely to be among the top wicket-takers in PSL 2023 include Mohammad Wasim, Tom Curran and Mohammad Amir, to name a few.

Pakistan Super League 2023 will start on February 13 with last year’s finalists Lahore Qalandars taking on Multan Sultans at the Multan Cricket Stadium. 

The Qalandars are the reigning champions after defeating the Sultans by 42 runs in the final last year. Islamabad United are the most successful team in the tournament’s history with two titles.

The six teams competing in the eighth season of Pakistan Super League are Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Multan Sultans, Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators.

All teams will square off twice in a double round robin format in the tournament and it will be played in two stages. The first phase of PSL 2023 will take place at the Multan Cricket Stadium and National Stadium in Karachi between February 13 and 26, while the second stage will have games at the Gaddafi Stadium and the Pindi Cricket Stadium between February 26 and March 19. 

There will be a total of 34 games in the tournament, including the qualifier, eliminators and final. The schedule for the season is designed in a way that allows four sides  - Qalandars, Sultans, Karachi Kings and Islamabad United - to play five matches each in front of their supporters and one against each of the other teams. 

Meanwhile, Quetta and Peshawar won't have any home games since their home venues are not ready to host high-profile games yet.

Lahore Qalandars (LAH) will face reigning champions Multan Sultans (MUL) in the Pakistan Super League 2022 final at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Sunday, February 27. The match will start at 8 PM IST.

Defending champions Multan Sultans will take on Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2022 final at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Sunday, February 27.

Led by Mohammad Rizwan, Multan Sultans have been the most dominant side in the ongoing edition of PSL. After topping the league phase with nine wins in 10 matches, the Sultans defeated the Qalandars by 28 runs in the first qualifier to reach the PSL 2022 final.

On the other hand, Lahore Qalandars defeated Islamabad United by six runs in the second eliminator to storm into their second PSL final. The Shaheen Afridi-led Qalandars had earlier finished second in the league phase with six wins and four defeats.

Australia all-rounder James Faulkner has been handed a lifetime ban from playing in the Pakistan Super League after the 31-year-old accused the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) of not honouring a contractual agreement.

Taking to Twitter on February 19, a day before his team’s (Quetta Gladiators) final league stage game against Karachi Kings, Faulkner first apologised to Pakistan cricket fans while blaming the PCB and the PSL for their behaviour towards the all-rounder.

Pakistan Cricket Board responds

Reacting to the allegations made in James Faulkner’s twitter post, PCB said they had paid 70 per cent of the contract fee to the player’s British bank account in December, the ‘receipt of which was acknowledged by Mr Faulkner� 

The remaining 30 per cent was to be paid �0 days after the completion of the league� but the management has now decided to take it under consideration.

As relayed in the official statement made by the PCB and Quetta Gladiators, “in spite of the money being transferred and received in his account, Faulker continued to insist that a second duplicate payment of the same amount should be made to his account in Australia. This meant he would have been paid twice.�/span>

Talks between the two turned into a heated argument on Friday following which the 31-year-old pulled out of a crucial game for Quetta against Multan Sultans. What followed next was an absolute catastrophe as Faulker caused deliberate damage to hotel property, throwing his bat and helmet from the lobby floor balcony onto a chandelier.

The 31-year-old demanded an immediate release from the league and asked the board to make travel arrangements despite the assurance that his issues will be addressed. The aftermath of this forced PCB and PSL to take immediate action, resulting in a lifetime ban from playing in the future editions of the Pakistan Super League.

"Taking serious note of James Faulkner's gross misconduct that was an attempt to bring the PCB, Pakistan cricket and the Pakistan Super League into disrepute, it has been unanimously agreed by the PCB and the franchises that James Faulkner will not be drafted in future Pakistan Super League events," the board stated.
