Five-time EFL Cup winners Chelsea will host last season’s finalists Newcastle United in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup 2023-24 at Stamford Bridge in London, England. The Chelsea vs Newcastle United EFL Cup 2023-24 match will start at 1:30 AM Indian Standard Time (IST) on Wednesday, December 20.

Under manager Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea secured their place in the last eight after defeating Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in November.

Defender Benoît Badiashile opened the scoring in the 30th minute before star winger Raheem Sterling doubled the lead in the 59th minute to power Chelsea to a convincing victory.

Meanwhile, Chelsea will head into the game after beating Sheffield United 2-0 in the Premier League. 

With 22 points from 17 games, Mauricio Pochettino’s men are currently placed 10th in the Premier League 2023-24 standings.

On the other hand, Newcastle United registered an impressive 3-0 win over defending champions Manchester United at Old Trafford to book their place in the EFL 2023-24 quarter-finals.

Miguel Almirón, Lewis Hall and Joe Willock netted a goal each to help Newcastle register a sensational victory over United away from home.

With the win, Newcastle avenged their 0-2 loss to the Red Devils in the last season’s final. 

Led by manager Eddie Howe, Newcastle head into the crucial encounter after securing a 3-0 victory over Fulham in the Premier League.

The Magpies have jumped to sixth in the Premier League 2023-24 standings with 29 points from 17 matches.

Ahead of the EFL Cup quarter-final, both Chelsea and Newcastle have several injury concerns. The likes of Reece James, Ben Chilwell, Marc Cucurella, Trevoh Chalobah, Lesley Ugochukwu, Wesley Fofana, Carney Chukwuemeka, Noni Madueke, Romeo Lavia and Robert Sanchez will be unavailable for the Blues.

For Newcastle, Nick Pope, Lewis Hall, Joe Willock, Sandro Tonali (suspended), Elliot Anderson, Jacob Murphy, Matt Targett, Harvey Barnes and Javi Manquillo are ruled out of the Chelsea clash.

Furthermore, Alexander Isak, Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar and Joelinton are also doubtful for the quarter-final encounter.

Defending EFL Cup champions Manchester United will host last season’s finalists Newcastle United in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup 2023-24 at Old Trafford in Greater Manchester, England. The Premier League 2022-23 top-four race is heating up as we enter the business end of the season. 

While the Premier League title is all but wrapped up by Manchester City following Arsenal’s slump in form in April, the battle for the top four spots is still very much alive with as many as six teams in contention for UEFA Champions League qualification next season.

The likes of Manchester City and Arsenal have already secured a place in the top four and with it, UEFA Champions League football for next season.

However, the remaining two spots in the Premier League top four are still very much alive and up for grabs.

As many as four teams are battling it out for the remaining two spots in the Premier League top four. These teams are Newcastle United, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Brighton.

With that in mind, let’s have a look at the scenarios and circumstances that each team will be hoping for the secure a top-four spot in the Premier League as they chase UEFA Champions League qualification for next season.

Premier League 2022-23 top four race and run-in

Newcastle United

Currently, third in the standings with 65 points from 33 games, Newcastle is one of two teams in contention for a top-four spot who have their destiny in their own hands. If the Geordies win their remaining five games they will secure third spot comfortably. However, even two wins and a draw from their remaining matches will be enough for them to secure a UEFA Champions League spot for next season. 

Their remaining fixtures include clashes against Arsenal, Leeds United, Brighton, Leicester City, and Chelsea on the final day of the season.

Manchester United

Like Newcastle, Manchester United also have their top-four destiny in their own hands. After 33 games, the Red Devils have amassed 63 points and need another nine points from an available 15 to guarantee UEFA Champions League football next season. It’s worth also mentioning that should the chasing pack drop points in their remaining matches, United could finish in the top four even if they don’t get the three wins necessary to guarantee a top-four finish at this stage.

United’s remaining fixtures will see them travel to West Ham United as well as Bournemouth and welcome the likes of Wolves, Chelsea, and Fulham to Old Trafford.

Liverpool

After an underwhelming first half of the campaign, fifth-paced Liverpool seems to be building up a head of steam at the business end of the season. They have accumulated 59 points from 34 games and will rely on the likes of Newcastle and Manchester United to drop points, while simultaneously ensuring that they win all of their remaining four Premier League matches against the likes of Brentford, Leicester City, Aston Villa, and Southampton. 

What’s also worth noting is that there’s a chance that Liverpool could win all their remaining games and still not finish in the top four if Newcastle and Manchester United claim seven and nine points respectively from their remaining fixtures.

Brighton

One of the surprise packages of the ongoing Premier League season, Brighton is currently in sixth position with 55 points from 32 games. Like Liverpool, they need to win all of their remaining six matches while hoping that the likes of Newcastle and Manchester United drop points in pursuit of a place in the top four.

However, that will be easier said than done, especially when you take one glance at their remaining fixtures. Their last six league games of the season will see them square off against Everton, Southampton, and Manchester City at home, while trips to Arsenal, Newcastle United, and Aston Villa also await them, making their chances of a top-four finish an outside one at best.

The record for the biggest wins in Premier League history is shared by three teams - Manchester United, Leicester City and Liverpool.

Liverpool, for starters, are the latest team to have pulled off the biggest victory in Premier League history.

During their 2022-23 league outing against Bournemouth at Anfield, the Reds secured a 9-0 win, thanks to braces from Roberto Firmino and Luis Diaz, Harvey Elliott, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Fabio Carvalho and an own goal from Bournemouth’s Chris Mepham.

Jurgen Klopp’s men’s result equalled their biggest margin of victory in English top-flight football set against Crystal Palace (9-0, 1989) and Rotherham Town (10-1, 1896).

Liverpool’s victory was the club’s first win of the 2022-23 Premier League campaign, having drawn the first two fixtures and lost 1-2 away at Manchester United.

Historically, Manchester United are the first team to score nine goals in a Premier League game. During the 1994-95 season, the Red Devils registered a landslide 9-0 win over Ipswich Town.

In just his seventh game for the MUFC, Andy Cole netted five times in the fixture and became the first to do so in a PL game. Mark Hughes (two goals), Roy Keane, and Paul Ince completed the rout.

The Red Devils would replicate the feat 25 years later in the 2020-21 Premier League season.

Hosting Southampton at Old Trafford, Man United secured a 9-0 win with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial (two goals), Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Daniel James finding the net.

Jan Bednarek scored an own goal as the Saints slumped to a 0-9 defeat for the second time in their history.

Leicester City is the other team to register a 9-0 victory over Southampton in the Premier League era. The Foxes rode on hat-tricks from Ayoze Perez and Jamie Vardy to pull off their biggest win in English top-flight history.

The pair were supported by Ben Chilwell, Youri Tielemans and James Maddison as Leicester scripted the largest away win in the English top-flight.

Tottenham Hotspur are the last team to have scored nine goals in a Premier League match, as they rallied to a 9-1 win against Wigan Athletic in 2009.

Jermaine Defoe emulated Andy Cole and Alan Shearer as the third player to score five goals in a Premier League fixture. At the same time, his teammates Peter Crouch, Aaron Lennon, David Bentley, Niko Kranjčar and Paul Scharner contributed a goal each.

The 2020-21 Premier League season will go down as one of the most unpredictable campaigns in years, with nine different clubs sitting atop the points table at various points. Manchester City, who were as low as 11th in November, turned things around and are on course to win their fifth league title.

Often not, the greatest of title races have a shift in dynamics in the second half of a season. As recent as the 2018-19 campaign, City's 2-1 win over Liverpool at the start of 2019 opened up the title race, and the Sky Blues went on to lift their fourth crown, as they won 16 of their 17 games to topple the Reds.

That fixture is a title-defining result but simply not the greatest in this list of games that dramatically changed the course of a title race in past Premier League campaigns.

Liverpool 4�? Newcastle United (1995�?6 season)

The 1995-96 season is remembered for two things: Newcastle United squandering their 12-point lead in the title race to Manchester United and the other being Kevin Keegan's "I love it" rant aimed at then-Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Nicknamed as 'The Entertainers', the Magpies were in thorough command of the Premier League, but as they approached matchday 26, the countdown to their surprise downfall kicked in motion. Newcastle secured a 2-1 win at Middlesborough on matchday 25, but they lost five of their next eight fixtures, including a 0-2 loss to Arsenal that saw Kevin Keegan's men surrender the top spot for the first time in the 1995-96 season.

The next fixture, rated as one of the greatest Premier League games of all time, was the final nail in the coffin as Liverpool's 4-3 win paved the way for Manchester United to take the lead in what was a one-sided title affair. Roy Evans' Reds took an early lead through Robbie Fowler in the second minute but trailed by 2-1 at half-time, with Les Ferdinand and David Ginola-Ceze finding the net in the 10th and 14th minute.

Within 12 minutes of the second half, Newcastle took the lead away from Liverpool once again as Faustino Asprilla cancelled out Fowler's 55th-minute strike with a 57th-minute goal. Just as Newcastle was set for a much-need victory, English striker Stan Collymore struck twice in the 68th and in stoppage time to send the Anfield faithful into a frenzy.

While this result dampened Newcastle's title hopes, Manchester United - leading the standings - had to wait until the campaign's final fixture to be crowned champions.

Manchester United 4-4 Everton (2011-12 season)

In the 2011-12 season, the Premier League saw the rise of Manchester's Blue side and the downfall of an erstwhile dynastic United. The Red Devils' error-ridden campaign was something of a shocker for fans who followed their 20-year journey in the Premier League - they never conceded four or more goals twice at home in a single league season.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men came into the tie five points clear of noisy neighbours Manchester City, and a win against Everton would put them a step closer to an unprecedented 20th English league title. However, the Toffees had a surprise in store, which would unsettle the reigning champions for the remainder of the campaign.

After 30 minutes of a tug-of-war for converting goalscoring opportunities, Everton took the lead in the 33rd minute through  Nikica Jelavic before Wayne Rooney equalized in the 41st minute. By the 69th minute, Manchester United led 4-2 with goals from Danny Welbeck, Nani, and Rooney (second of the game) apart from Marouane Fellaini's 67th-minute goal for the visitors.

Complacency overshadowed the United defence as they conceded twice in the final ten minutes of the game and finished at 4-4. The result meant City could go equal on points with their neighbours on the points table, with a win on the next matchday. At the end of the campaign, Roberto Mancini's men were declared champions based on a superior goal difference.

Liverpool 0-2 Chelsea (2013-14 season)

If there is a single campaign that Liverpool fans will strongly want to avoid, it will be the 2013-14 season where an infamous 'Gerrard slip' cost them the title.

Brendan Rodgers' men were unbeaten in the last 16 games in the league since January 1, 2014, but a costly error from Steven Gerrard - who miscued a Mamadou Sakho pass and then slipped - allowed Demba Ba to run unopposed and score Chelsea's first goal past Simon Mignolet.

The Liverpool captain tried to make amends with a couple of goal attempts, but sadly it didn't meet the target. The Reds, who were showcasing a better attacking intent than Jose Mourinho's Chelsea, couldn't make a solid breakthrough past the stubborn defence, and despite the introduction of Daniel Sturridge, the Merseysiders were still short of finding the net.

Their frustration grew deeper as former Red Fernando Torres broke clear of the Liverpool defence and set up Willian for the second goal. With the 2-0 win, Chelsea moved within two points of the Reds and blew the title race open.

The English Premier League return to its glory over the weekend following a brief round of FA Cup fixtures, and the matchweek 24 brings along some exciting games right from the beginning.

But what makes Liverpool the slight favourites is their away record this season. Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur

Manchester City are on a roll since the turn of the year. Following their 3-1 win over Swansea City in the FA Cup, City registered a 15th successive victory, which is now the longest run by a top-flight side in English football history. Up next for them is a stern test against Tottenham, who have just welcomed Harry Kane back in the team.

Tottenham may dominate City in their head-to-head record that sees them winning 25 of the 47 meetings, but the momentum is rightly on City’s side. West Brom vs Manchester United

Following a setback against Everton in the Premier League, which has seen Manchester City extending their lead to five points at the top of the table, Manchester United now make a trip to The Hawthorns to face relegations strugglers, West Brom. 

United’s away form has been a cause of distress for their opponents this season. The Red Devils are unbeaten in 18 away games so far, and it’s hard to see West Brom putting a dent in their run. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United have won 16 of their 25 meetings against the Baggies, while West Brom have won a mere four.

As far as goal scoring is concerned, United have scored more than thrice as many goals (24) away from home than West Brom have (7) at home. United’s inability to find the net in the opening 15 minutes, however, remains a concern. Nevertheless, even if United go behind, you can rightly punt on a potential comeback in the second period given that they have scored 16 of their 24 away goals in the final 45 minutes.

Arsenal vs Leeds United

Both Arsenal and Leeds United are in desperate need of points, which makes this fixture all the more important. While Arsenal lead the head-to-head chart with 12 wins in 25 Premier League games, their recent form is a cause of concern. Both Arsenal and Leeds have lost twice in their last five games, but the latter has, in fact, won thrice too.

Arsenal’s ineffectiveness in front of goal at home can be underlined by the fact that they have netted just 12 goals at the Emirates this season. Leeds, on the other hand, have scored 22 away from home, scoring 11 goals in either half. The Peacocks, however, have conceded the same amount of goals away from home. Leeds have developed a pattern this season, a pattern on conceding goals in the first period itself. They have, in fact, let in 14 goals in the opening 45 minutes away from home.

Chelsea vs Newcastle United

Chelsea have been marginally winning games since bringing Thomas Tuchel at the helm and a game against a struggling Newcastle United side doesn’t seem to change that. The Magpies have lost three of their last five away games so far, and they are even winless in all of their last five visits at Stamford Bridge.

Not to forget the top of the table clash between two of England's fiercest rivals, Liverpool and Manchester United.

Fulham vs Chelsea

In a total of 28 games between Fulham and Chelsea in the Premier League, the former has claimed victory in a solitary game, which came way back in 2006. Chelsea, on the other hand, have won 17 and the remaining 10 have ended in a draw. One can rightly expect goals in this particular fixture as the teams have played just four goalless draws since 2001. Both Fulham and Chelsea are coming on the back of an evident struggle. The Cottagers are without a win in their last six league games, playing out five consecutive draws, while the Blues have won a solitary fixture in their last five outings.

United, on the other hand, are unbeaten in their last 11 league outings.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men have scored more away goals (22) this season than Liverpool have at Anfield (21). A contrast in timings underlines they are more likely to concede first, as eight of their 11 goals conceded away from home have been scored in the first half. If United are to make a comeback, you can easily expect them to do so in the second period as a whopping 15 of their 22 away goals have been scored in the second half.

Manchester City vs Crystal Palace

Pep Guardiola's Manchester City have scored at least twice in five of their last six games in all competitions. Keep in mind it includes a 4-1 drubbing of Arsenal, a 3-1 win over Chelsea and a 2-0 victory over Manchester United within a span of 16 days. Now coming on the back of a narrow 1-0 win over Brighton, one can right punt on a City win as they have won 12 of their 20 games against Crystal Palace in the Premier League while losing just three. Palace's away record of conceding 14 goals further puts the game in City's favour.

Guardiola's men are rightly tipped to open the scoring as they have notched 11 of their 15 goals at home in the first 45 minutes. A further bifurcation predicts the Cityzens to score in the opening 30 minutes itself, as they scored eight times during the time frame at home so far. As for Palace, they too can hammer an early blow as they have scored three times in the opening 15 minutes away from home.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

Arsenal's four-game winning streak (across all competitions) was interrupted on Thursday as Crystal Palace managed to hold them to a 0-0 draw. Up next for them is another home game against Newcastle United, an opponent who they have defeated a whopping 30 times in their 50 meetings in the league while losing 10 and drawing 10. Arsenal's 3-1 victory over Chelsea on the Boxing Day was their first home win in the league since October 2020. The Gunners have, in fact, won just one of their last five home games in the league, losing twice and drawing twice.

Newcastle United's away record is no different, as they have lost four of their last five away outings, winning just one. Arsenal's struggle to make Emirates a fortress can be underlined by the fact that they have scored just nine goals at the venue, one more than what the Magpies have scored away from home this season. That coupled with the fact that they have conceded 11 goals at home is another factor to worry. If we are to see a goal from Arsenal, expect them to bag it in the middle phase, as they have scored eight of their nine home goals between minutes 16-75. At the same time though, don't write Newcastle off, as Arsenal's defence has conceded six goals in the final half-hour of the game.
