The Wankhede Stadium is one of the iconic cricket stadiums located in Mumbai, India.

Established in 1974, the Wankhede Stadium is owned and operated by Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).

Situated near Marine Drive in the Churchgate neighbourhood of Mumbai, the cricket ground has a seating capacity of around 33,000.

The stadium was built after disputes between the Cricket Club of India (CCI) and MCA over the allocation of tickets for cricket matches.

It is the home ground of the Mumbai team in domestic cricket and the Mumbai franchise in the Indian T20 League. 

The Wankhede Stadium staged its first international fixture, a Test match played between hosts India and West Indies in January 1975. Led by Clive Lloyd, West Indies won by 201 runs.

It has staged several important matches in major international competitions including in 1987 Cricket World Cup, 1996 Cricket World Cup, 2011 Cricket World Cup, 2023 Cricket World Cup and the 2016 World T20. 

Apart from international matches, it has also staged several Indian T20 League matches and other T20 matches in domestic as well as at club levels.

Highest total

The Madhya Pradesh cricket team holds the record for the highest total at the Wankhede Stadium in T20 cricket. During a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy group match in 2019, the Naman Ojha-led Madhya Pradesh posted 244/4 in their 20 overs against Meghalaya. Electing to bat first, Madhya Pradesh rode on fifties from Rajat Patidar (68), Ashutosh Sharma (60) and Naman Ojha (56) to post a record T20 total at the venue. In reply, Meghalaya could only manage 159/9 in their allotted overs as Madhya Pradesh secured a comprehensive 85-run victory in Mumbai.

Lowest total

Team Kolkata registered the lowest total at the Wankhede Stadium in the T20 format. Put into bat, Kolkata were bundled out for 67 in 15.2 overs by Team Mumbai during the inaugural edition of the Indian T20 League in 2008. Captain Sourav Ganguly and Ajit Agarkar top-scored for Kolkata with 15 each. For Mumbai, Shaun Pollock scalped three wickets while Dwayne Bravo, Rohan Raje and Dominic Thornely bagged two wickets each. Later, the Sachin Tendulkar-led Mumbai chased down the required target in just 5.3 overs to claim an eight-wicket win.

Most runs

India cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has scored the most runs at the venue in T20 cricket. Between 2007 and 2024, the swashbuckling right-handed batter amassed 2,445 runs in 85 matches at an average of 34.43 and a strike rate of 136.43. He has slammed one century and 16 fifties at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in cricket’s shortest format. Rohit has represented the likes of the Indian cricket team, Team Mumbai in the Indian T20 League as well as the Mumbai cricket team in domestic cricket at this venue.

Most wickets

Former Sri Lankan cricketer Lasith Malinga has scalped the most wickets at this cricket ground in the T20 format. Representing Team Mumbai in the Indian T20 League, the former right-arm pacer bagged 68 wickets in 43 matches at an average of 17.33 and an economy of 7.00. His best T20 bowling figures at the Wankhede Stadium is 4/16 against Team Deccan in Indian T20 League 2012. Malinga’s former Team Mumbai teammate Harbhajan Singh is second on the list with 53 wickets in 55 matches.  

Highest individual score

Kerala’s Mohammed Azharuddeen holds the record for the highest individual score at the Wankhede Stadium in T20 cricket. Opening the batting, Mohammed Azharuddeen smashed 137 not out off just 54 balls while chasing 197 against Mumbai in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy clash in 2021. His scintillating knock was laced with nine fours and 11 maximums as he helped Kerala chase down the target in 15.5 overs. Earlier, Mumbai scored 196/7 in their 20 overs. Kerala won the game by eight wickets.

Best bowling figures

Former Mumbai cricketer Siddhesh Lad has the best bowling figures at this venue in the T20 format. The right-arm off-spinner registered magnificent figures of 5/13 against Mizoram during a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy group match in 2019. Lad dismissed Lalhmangaiha, captain KB Pawan, Lalhruaizela, Saidingliana Sailo and Lalhruai Ralte to bowl out Mizoram for 77 in 19.3 overs. Mumbai later successfully chased down the required target in just eight overs as they won the match by 10 wickets. Apart from Lad, Harbhajan Singh, Wanindu Hasaranga, Santha Moorthy and Umran Malik have scalped five wicket-hauls in the T20 format at the Wankhede Stadium.

Highest partnership

Team Bangalore’s AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli hold the record for the highest partnership at the Wankhede Stadium in T20 cricket. During an Indian T20 League match in 2015, AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli forged an unbeaten 215-run partnership for the second wicket against Team Mumbai. While Kohli remained unbeaten on 82 not out, AB de Villiers hammered 133 not out off 59 balls to power Bangalore to 235/1 in their 20 overs. Bangalore later restricted Mumbai to 196/7 in their allotted overs to win the match by 39 runs.

Highest successful chase

The England cricket team holds the record for the highest successful chase at this venue against South Africa during an ICC World T20 clash in 2016. Chasing a target of 230, England rode on Joe Root’s 44-ball 83 and Jason Roy’s 43 off 16 balls to chase down the target in 19.4 overs with two wickets in hand.

Newcomers Lucknow etched their name into the record books for the highest successful run chase in the Indian T20 League, as they chased down Chennai’s target of 210 in their Indian T20 League 2022 game at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, March 31.

Lucknow rode on the efforts of Quinton de Kock (61 runs of 45 balls) and Evin Lewis (55 runs of 23 balls) to beat Ravindra Jadeja's Chennai by six-wickets with three balls to spare.

Put to bat first, Chennai reached 100 runs in 9.1 overs, but a 60-run partnership for the fourth wicket and a six-ball 16 from MS Dhoni propelled the defending champions to 210/7.

In response, KL Rahul and Co. made a confident start with 50 runs in the powerplay before losing four wickets between overs 10 and 15.

While Evin Lewis remained unbeaten at the crease during the death overs, the West Indian batter received support from Deepak Hooda (13 runs off eight balls) and Ayush Badoni (19 runs off nine balls) to plot a score of 211/4 in 19.3 overs, at a run rate of 10.82.

Highest successful run chase in the Indian T20 League

Rajasthan holds the record for the highest successful run chase in the Indian T20 League. In the 2020 edition, Rajasthan chased down Punjab’s target of 223 despite losing an early wicket. After KL Rahul’s men posted a score of 222/2 on the back of a Mayank Agarwal century, Steve Smith and Co. secured a four-wicket win riding on 50-plus knocks of Smith, Sanju Samson and Rahul Tewatia.

Mumbai will square off against Vidarbha in the semi-final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022-23 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on November 3. The clash is scheduled to commence at 4:30 PM IST.

The two teams were clubbed in the same Elite Group A alongside Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Railways, Uttarakhand and Mizoram.

Mumbai qualified for the quarter-final by winning six of their seven group phase matches. The Ajinkya Rahane-led side suffered their solitary defeat against Railways by four wickets.

In the quarter-final, Mumbai won a thrilling contest against Saurashtra by two wickets. 

Pacer Tushar Deshpande, Mumbai’s leading wicket-taker this season, took three wickets as Saurashtra posted a competitive total of 166/8. Thereafter, an all-round batting performance coupled with tailenders�contributions saw Mumbai through to the semis, with just three balls to spare.

On the other hand, Vidarbha won five and lost two of their seven group games. One of those wins, against Uttarakhand, came by a close margin of two runs. Seamer Yash Thakur bagged four wickets in that match to help his team defend a total of 157 runs.

Following a win over Chhattisgarh by five wickets in the pre-quarterfinal, Vidarbha faced Delhi in the quarters, where they managed to hold on to their nerves in a crunch one-run win.

Pacer Yash Thakur, who is leading the wicket-taking charts for his team, yet again tormented the opposition batting line-up with a four-wicket haul to help his team seal a semi-final spot.

Interestingly, both sides will be eyeing their maiden final in the tournament’s history.

Mumbai vs Vidarbha head-to-head in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

The two teams have faced each other on three instances in the tournament’s history, with Mumbai winning on all three occasions. 

Mumbai and Vidarbha locked horns earlier in the competition this season, with the former winning the fixture by 15 runs.

The other two match-ups took place in the 2018-19 and 2015-16 campaigns, where Mumbai won by six wickets and five wickets, respectively.

It is the 1998-99 Ranji Trophy final. Chandrakant Pandit, the captain of Madhya Pradesh, had Karnataka under control for the majority of the match. Heartbreakingly, Vijay Bharadwaj, who had six for 24, snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

When Madhya Pradesh was 2/1 in the pursuit of a modest objective of 108 in the 2021-22 final, Pandit, as coach, must have had comparable anxieties. But no one in the Mumbai ranks could pull a Bharadwaj, and Madhya Pradesh, under the leadership of Aditya Shrivastava, were unstoppable, taking home the trophy for the first time in their history.

After Mumbai were all out for 269 in their second innings on day five, Sharma and Patidar helped them chase down 108 in 29.5 overs to make Sunday an unforgettable day for Madhya Pradesh. The historic victory was forged by centuries from Yash Dubey, Shubham Sharma, and Rajat Patidar in the first innings.

Chandrakant Pandit’s Ranji Trophy achievements

Pandit has been switching teams all around India for the past 23 years. During his coaching lifetime, he not only helped Mumbai win the Ranji Trophy three times (2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons, and then again in 2015-16 after a 10-year break), but he also changed Assam's culture towards the game. But Pandit didn't start receiving the credit he deserved until Vidarbha won consecutive titles (2017�8 and 18�9 seasons). In domestic cricket, Vidarbha was seen as an underdog team, therefore frequently making it to the elite group was seen as a significant accomplishment.

When asked about his leadership and strategic choices, MP captain Aditya Shrivastava didn't hold back when he grabbed the trophy. Shrivastava publicly and eloquently lauded the 60-year-old coach, claiming that he had never managed a cricket team at such a high level and that all he had done was largely the result of the preparations made by Pandit and his support crew. Similar comments were expressed by Faiz Fazal, the only captain from Vidarbha to have won the Ranji twice.

As a result of Pandit's influence over the group, when Srivastava planned to be married, he asked this Pandit—rather than the Pandit who may officiate the ceremony—what date he might reserve. He was only given two days off from training even then.

Chandrakant Pandit is continuing the legacy of those who trained him, including Ramakant Achrekar, Ashok Mankad, and Polly Umrigar, all of whom came from the Bombay school.

“It’s a great memory which I left 23 years back on this ground. I think it’s all God’s blessings that we come back here and win this trophy which was fabulous,�the legendary head coach told Star Sports.

“It’s a bit emotional because missing out on this trophy when I was the captain of Madhya Pradesh on this very ground. Some say ‘father couldn’t do it but the son does it� so Aditya Shrivastava has done it tremendously,�he added.

“I always look for challenging jobs when the team isn’t doing very well. There are a lot of youngsters in the team and I probably want to develop that culture for a particular state. Particularly about MP, I played for this team for almost six years. I knew the culture so didn’t turn down the offer that came to me in March.�/span>

Madhya Pradesh (MP) will take on Mumbai (MUM) in the Ranji Trophy 2022 final at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru starting on Wednesday, June 22. The match will start at 9:30 PM IST (Indian Standard Time).

Madhya Pradesh will lock horns with Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy 2022 final at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru starting on Wednesday, June 22. 

Led by Aditya Srivastava, Madhya Pradesh defeated Bengal by 174 runs in the semi-final to storm into Ranji Trophy final for the first time since the 1998-99 season. Earlier, Madhya Pradesh topped Elite A Group before thrashing Punjab by 10 wickets in the quarter-final.

On the other hand, Mumbai reached the Ranji Trophy final after beating Uttar Pradesh in the other semi-final on the basis of a first innings lead.

Prithvi Shaw-led Mumbai had earlier created history as they hammered Uttarakhand by 725 runs in the quarter-final to record the biggest win in First Class cricket by runs. Mumbai broke the previous record that was set by New South Wales in 1930, securing a massive 685-run victory over Queensland. Mumbai also topped Elite D Group with 16 points from three matches.

Mumbai are the most successful team in Ranji Trophy history, having won the title a record 41 times. Under former captain Aditya Tare, Mumbai last won the Ranji Trophy title in the 2015-16 season, beating Saurashtra by an innings and 21 runs in the final.

Sarfaraz Khan has been the standout batter for Mumbai in the ongoing edition of Ranji Trophy, amassing 803 runs in five matches at a staggering average of 133.83. With five-time Indian T20 League champions Mumbai already knocked out of the playoff race in the ongoing edition of the tournament, fans are hoping to see Arjun Tendulkar, son of India cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, finally make his Indian T20 League debut against Delhi in their final league match of the season at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday, May 21.

Despite being part of the Mumbai franchise for the last two years, left-arm fast bowler Arjun has failed to make the cut in the playing XI. The 22-year-old was acquired by Mumbai for INR 30 lakh during the Indian T20 League 2022 mega auction held in Bengaluru in February. He was also bought by Mumbai for INR 20 lakh in the 2021 auction.

Primarily a left-arm pacer who can bat, Arjun has already made his debut for his domestic side Mumbai against Haryana in the 2020-21 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He has picked two wickets in two matches that he has played so far at the domestic level.
