After taking a short break, Sunil Narine has fully recovered and is ready to face Mumbai this Monday, March 31, 2025.

‘Sunil is 100% fit. He has definitely recovered well and he's been practising since yesterday, Kolkata head coach Chandrakant Pandit stated. ‘Today he is practising as well so he is absolutely fine at the moment,he added.

Narine was reportedly unwell in the morning before their match against Rajasthan. The player needed medical attention and had to return to the team hotel in the evening to rest.

This urged Kolkata to replace the player with Moeen Ali for an unexpected debut game. Kolkata won that match, and Ali received praise. ‘I've been practising well, and I just try to be ready all the time,Ali said in an interview about his experience.

In a podcast, English cricketers Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali discussed the idea of playing for Pakistan. The host hinted at his preferred team, but the two players offered interesting takes.

Adil expressed a strong wish to succeed in the sport in his home country rather than switch allegiance. Moeen, on the other hand, emphasised that the chance to play at the international level was his main focus, regardless of the nation he represented.

‘If I was born here I'd look to play if I was born in Pakistan if I was born in India wherever I was born yeah surely that's the country that I will try and play for Adil said when asked the question during Beard Before Wicket podcast.

The show host shared that he sees himself as 'British-Asian' and would pick Pakistan over England if given the choice. Moeen found this idea 'crazy' and added that he never thought about it at all.

Adil Rashid added that he never thought about playing for Pakistan instead of England. When the host suggested it might be a rule stopping Rashid from playing for Pakistan, both stars clarified, saying ‘We don't qualify to play for Pakistan

The Headingley Cricket Ground is an iconic cricket venue located in Leeds, England.

Established in 1890, the Headingley Cricket Ground is named after a suburb of the city of Leeds, and is linked to a rugby league ground. The venue has a current seating capacity of around 18,000

It is the home ground of the England cricket team and the Yorkshire County Cricket Club at the domestic level.

The Headingley Cricket Ground staged its first international cricket match, a Test played between arch-rivals England and Australia in 1899. The Test match ended in a draw.

It later hosted its first One-Day International (ODI) between England and West Indies in 1973. The hosts won the nail-biting encounter by one wicket.

After almost five decades in 2021, the Headingley Cricket Ground staged its first T20 international played between England and Pakistan. Led by Jos Buttler, England won the game comprehensively by 45 runs.

Let’s have a look at Headingley Cricket Ground T20 records and stats.

Headingley Cricket Ground T20 records and stats

Highest total

The England cricket team holds the record for the highest total at the Headingley Cricket Ground in T20 international cricket. During the second T20I of Pakistan’s tour of England in July 2021, the Jos Buttler-led hosts were bowled out for 200 in 19.5 overs. Put in to bat, England rode on Buttler’s 59 along with contributions from Liam Livingstone (38) and Moeen Ali (36) to post a record T20 total at the venue. England later restricted Pakistan to 155/9 in their allotted overs to register a 45-run victory in Leeds.

Lowest total

The Pakistan cricket team registered the lowest total at the Headingley Cricket Ground in the T20 format. Led by Babar Azam, Pakistan could only manage 155/9 in their 20 overs while chasing England’s 200 in the second T20I of a three-match series in 2021. Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan top-scored for Pakistan with 37 off 29 balls. For England, pacer Saqib Mahmood picked up three wickets while Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali bagged two wickets each. England won the T20I by 45 runs to level the series 1-1. The hosts later clinched the three-match series 2-1 in Manchester.

Most runs

England cricket team’s limited-overs captain Jos Buttler has the most runs at the venue in T20 international cricket. The swashbuckling right-handed batter has scored 59 runs in the solitary T20I innings that he has played against Pakistan in 2021. Buttler’s teammate Liam Livingstone features second on the list with 38 runs in one T20I innings at a strike rate of 165.21.

Most wickets

England’s Saqib Mahmood and Pakistan’s Mohammad Hasnain share the record for the most wickets at this cricket ground in the T20I format. Saqib Mahmood produced a match-winning spell of 4-0-33-3 against Pakistan in 2021. In the same match, Pakistan pacer Mohammad Hasnain picked up three wickets for 51 runs in his quota of four overs to bowl out England for 200 in 19.5 overs.

Highest individual score

England captain Jos Buttler also holds the record for the highest individual score at the Headingley Cricket Ground in T20 international cricket. Opening the batting, Jos Buttler smashed 59 runs off just 39 balls against Pakistan in the second T20I in Leeds in July 2021. His blitzkrieg knock was laced with seven fours and two maximums to power England to 200. Later, the hosts restricted Pakistan to 155/9 in their allotted overs to win the game by 45 runs.

Best bowling figures

England fast bowler Saqib Mahmood has the best bowling figures at this venue in the T20 format. The right-arm pacer registered match-winning figures of 3/33 against Pakistan in a T20I game in 2021. Defending 200, Saqib Mahmood dismissed Pakistan captain Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf to restrict Pakistan to 155/9 in their 20 overs. Mahmood’s impressive spell guided England to a 45-run win in Leeds.

Highest partnership

England’s Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali hold the record for the highest partnership at the Headingley Cricket Ground in T20 international cricket. Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali stitched an impressive 67-run partnership for the third wicket against Pakistan in the second T20I in 2021. While Jos Buttler slammed a 39-ball 59, Moeen Ali scored 36 off just 16 balls to help England post 200. England later restricted Pakistan to 155/9 to win the game by 45 runs.

Racism in cricket is one of the darkest truths that continue to draw blood from the sport. It showcases how players are condemned to racial slurs or monikers that carry ill intent.

Earlier this year, in India’s third Test against Australia in Sydney, Indian cricketers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj alleged racial abuse from the crowd and lodged a complaint, tainting what had been an otherwise competitive series on the field.

Later, South African players, meanwhile, showed their support for the Black Lives Matter movement by raising their fists ahead of their Boxing Day Test against Sri Lanka.

A country blighted by the apartheid, South Africa came under criticism earlier in the year for not “taking a kneeduring their tour to England, adding another page to the controversies around racism.

The history of racist incidents in cricket largely ranges from remarks on skin colour and nationality. And despite the Anti-Discrimination Policy, these cases are still prevalent.

In the latest instance, England's Ollie Robinson was suspended for decade-old racist as well as sexist tweets that resurfaced following his Test debut against New Zealand.

Here are some instances of racism in cricket that rocked the sport:

Monkeygate

The Monkeygate saga is by far the ugliest controversy to have unfolded in Australia-India rivalry and one which still resonates today.

The incident, a verbal altercation between Andrew Symonds and Harbhajan Singh in an already-tense second Australia-India Test at Sydney in 2008, saw the Indian off-spinner allegedly call the Aussie a ‘Monkey

Image courtesy: AFP / Prakash Singh

Sachin Tendulkar, a key witness in the episode, gave his inputs to the umpires stating that Harbhajan used the north-Indian phrase /span>teri ma ki- a derogatory slang in Hindi referencing the mother.

While the umpires claimed to have not heard the use of the word as Andrew Symonds claimed, they reported Harbhajan Singh to the match referee. After a four-hour hearing, the Indian off-spinner was declared to have breached Level 3 of the ICC's Code of Conduct and was given a three-Test ban.

However, three weeks later, Harbhajan Singh was declared not guilty of racially abusing Andrew Symonds, as the Aussie failed to identify if the Indian had used the word monkey or a Hindi abuse. The level of the offence was reduced to abuse and ‘insult not amounting to racism Harbhajan Singh accepted the charge and was fined 50 per cent of his match fees.

The two reportedly buried the hatchet when they eventually became team-mates for team Mumbai in the 2011 edition of the Indian T20 League.

Darren Sammy called em>kalu/strong>

West IndiesDarren Sammy grabbed headlines for his outburst when he revealed he and Sri Lanka’s Thisara Perera were called ‘kaluby their Indian counterparts in team Hyderabad in the Indian T20 League.

The former Windies captain, who thought the word meant ‘strong stallion took to Instagram to vent out his frustration and stated that he learnt the actual meaning after watching an episode of comedian Hasan Minhaj’s show ‘Patriot Act

The former all-rounder, in due course, put the incident to rest after revealing that he had a healthy conversation with a former Hyderabad team-mate, who said that the word was used ‘from a place of love

Dean Jones‘terroristcomment on live TV

The late Dean Jones was one of the greatest players, and cricket commentators in the modern era but his infamous ‘terroristmention of South Africa’s Hashim Amla in the 2006 Colombo Test brought on the first case of racism in cricket in the modern era.

Image courtesy: AFP / Sanka Vidanagama

During the fourth day’s play of the second Test against Sri Lanka, Hashim Amla had taken the catch of Kumar Sangakkara and Dean Jones, part of the commentary team, was heard saying "the terrorist gets another wicket". Although the comment was made during a commercial break, it accidentally went on air as its broadcast had not been interrupted across the world.

Upon being sacked from the commentary panel, Dean Jones issued a personal apology to Hashim Amla and also apologised publicly, adding that his comments were “stupidand not meant to be disrespectful to any individual or faith.

Moeen Ali labelled Osama

In 2018, Moeen Ali made an astonishing revelation that he was called ‘Osamaby an Australian international during the 2015 Ashes.

Image courtesy: AFP / Ian Kington

Moeen Ali, whose autobiography came out that year, spoke of his experience when he played for England in his first Ashes Test and then drew up the fact that didn’t sit down well during the course of that match. An excerpt from his book read, “An Australian player had turned to me on the field and said, 'Take that, Osama.' I could not believe what I had heard. I remember going really red. I have never been so angry on a cricket field./p>

While investigations were opened based on Moeen Ali’s revelation, Trevor Bayliss, head coach of the Three Lions at that point of time, stated that the all-rounder didn’t want to pursue the matter any further and thus, the scandal was quickly resolved. It is said that the unnamed Australian player walked up to Moeen Ali and settled the matter with his intended words of “Take that, part-timer./span>

Jofra Archer tweets about racism

England’s Jofra Archer became the latest cricketer to find himself as a victim of racism in cricket, after tweeting about a New Zealand fan who hurled racial slurs after his dismissal in the 2019 Test in Mount Maunganui.

Image courtesy: AFP / Michael Bradley

In a set of tweets, with the first since being deleted, Jofra Archer called out the individual by stating, “Can the guy that was yelling bbc and bc from the scoreboard area today come forward and tell me what those words mean please? Because I don’t.../span>

Upon this disclosure, New Zealand and England opened a joint-investigation and the culprit, who seemingly pleaded guilty, was given a two-year ban.

While these five instances are the most prominent cases of racism in cricket, the sporting world has also been troubled by cases such as Darren Lehmann’s ‘black c***scomment against Sri Lanka in 2003, Herschelle Gibbs‘animals who should go back to the zoojibe at Pakistani supporters in 2007 and former Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed racially abusing South Africa’s Andile Phehlukwayo.

England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) managing director Ashley Giles has said that the England cricket team’s centrally contracted players are likely to miss the remainder of the COVID-19-hit Indian T20 League 2021 once the cash-rich tournament is rescheduled later this year.

The 14th edition of the Indian T20 League was postponed indefinitely due to the rising number of coronavirus cases inside the bio-bubble of multiple franchises across Delhi and Ahmedabad.

According to sources, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking at two windows for the T20 tournament to be resumed later this year. One option being explored is in the second half of September before the T20 World Cup (October-November) and the other being after mid-November.

However, England are scheduled to visit Bangladesh and Pakistan prior to the T20 World Cup, meaning their international players will be unavailable for their respective franchises.

“We’re planning on involvement of England players in England matches. We’ve got a full FTP (Future Tours Programme) schedule. So if those tours to Pakistan and Bangladesh are going ahead, I’d expect the players to be there,Giles told ESPNcricinfo.

Earlier, Giles had stated that England players who were involved in the latter stages of the Indian T20 League could skip the two-match Test series against New Zealand, which begins on June 2. However, the ECB seems to have changed their stance since.

"The New Zealand scenario was very different. Those matches were formalised at the end of January, by which time contracts were signed for players to have full involvement in the Indian T20 League,Giles said.

As many as 11 Englishmen were part of various franchises in the suspended Indian T20 League 2021 with a few players being key to the fortunes of their respective teams. Wicketkeeper Jos Buttler, who scored his maiden Indian T20 League ton before the tournament was suspended, is one such example.

“None of us knows what a rearranged Indian T20 League looks like at the moment, where it’s going to be or when. But from when we start this summer against New Zealand, our programme is incredibly busy,Giles added.

“We’ve got a lot of important, high-profile cricket including the T20 World Cup and the Ashes. And we’re going to have to look after our players./span>

Meanwhile, following the postponement of the Indian T20 League, England internationals Buttler, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali are currently serving their 10-day isolation period in government-approved hotels in the UK.

Table-toppers Bangalore take on second-placed Chennai in a mouth-watering Indian T20 League clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, April 25.

Bangalore remain the only unbeaten team in the tournament so far as the Virat Kohli-led side has won their first four matches of Indian T20 League 2021.

On the other hand, MS Dhoni’s Chennai have also looked in great form as they have won three out of their four matches.

Both Bangalore and Chennai will look to secure a win in this fixture to gain some much-needed momentum as they shift to a new venue.

Chennai vs Bangalore probable playing XI

While Chennai have won their last three matches on the trot after losing to Delhi in their season opener, the franchise would be a little bit concerned with the way their bowling wilted in their last match under the onslaught from Kolkata lower order comprising Andre Russell, Dinesh Karthik and Pat Cummins. Furthermore, Dhoni will also be worried with the form of Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu, who have been guilty of throwing their wickets away. However, Chennai are expected to retain their playing XI against Bangalore.

For Bangalore, captain Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers are in red-hot form and they would look to continue their good form at the batting-friendly Wankhede track.

Their bowling department has been equally impressive this season as the likes of Mohammed Siraj, Kyle Jamieson, Harshal Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal have all contributed.

Bangalore are also expected to remain unchanged against Chennai on Sunday.

Chennai predicted XI: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni (captain/wicket-keeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, Shardul Thakur, Lungi Ngidi, Deepak Chahar

Bangalore predicted XI: Virat Kohli (captain), Devdutt Padikkal, Shahbaz Ahmed, Glenn Maxwell, AB de Villiers (wicket-keeper), Kane Richardson, Washington Sundar, Kyle Jamieson, Harshal Patel, Mohammed Siraj,  Yuzvendra Chahal

Chennai vs Bangalore prediction: Who will win?

In the Chennai vs Bangalore head-to-head record in the Indian T20 League, MS Dhoni’s side has a clear edge over Virat Kohli’s men. The three-time champions have won 16 of the 26 matches played between these two sides while Bangalore have registered just nine victories. One of those encounters ended with no result. Additionally, Chennai have won three of their last five fixtures between the teams. MS Dhoni and his men are likely to be favourites for the clash due to their superior head-to-head record.

Create fantasy cricket team with Chennai vs Bangalore

Top Tip: Best Batsmen

Even though MS Dhoni hasn’t enjoyed the best of seasons so far on his return to competitive cricket since the last edition of Indian T20 League, the 39-year-old has a stellar record against Bangalore in the league. Dhoni has amassed 823 runs in 27 innings at a strike rate of 141.89 with four fifties to his name. The former India captain is tipped to score most runs against one of his favourite opposition on Sunday.

For Bangalore, captain Virat Kohli will be the player to watch out for against Chennai. Kohli has hit eight fifties against MS Dhoni’s side in just 25 innings. The 32-year-old has aggregated 887 runs at an average of 42.23.

Top Tip: Best Bowlers

In the bowling department, Chennai left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja is tipped to be the wrecker-in-chief for his side against Bangalore. The Gujarat-born cricketer has bagged 20 wickets in 22 innings against the opposition at an economy of 7.24.

Meanwhile, Chennai’s biggest bowling threat will be leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. The 30-year-old has scalped 12 wickets in 11 innings against MS Dhoni and his men.

Top Tips: All-rounder and Wicket-keeper

Chennai possess several top all-rounders in their line-up including Ravindra Jadeja, Moeen Ali and Shardul Thakur. However, in-form England all-rounder Moeen Ali would be the preferred choice for the spot. Ali has scored 133 runs and picked four wickets in four matches this season.

For Bangalore, Washington Sundar has already shown why he is such a utility cricketer in the shortest format of the game. Sundar has already picked 27 wickets while scoring 204 runs in 40 Indian T20 League matches.

For the wicket-keeper position, AB de Villiers would be the preferred choice over MS Dhoni. De Villiers is considered to be one of the best fielders to have played the sport. He is equally a safe fielder behind the stumps. The former South Africa captain has taken 107 catches and completed eight stumpings in the Indian T20 League history.

Chennai and Rajasthan will look to continue their winning momentum when they clash in the Indian T20 League at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday, April 18.

Both the sides bounced back after losing their opening fixtures with wins, albeit in contrasting styles. While Chennai thrashed Punjab by six wickets on Friday, Rajasthan defeated Delhi in a low-scoring thriller a day before.

Victory for either MS Dhoni-led Chennai or Sanju Samson’s Rajasthan will give their campaigns a boost.

Chennai vs Rajasthan full squads

Chennai: MS Dhoni (captain/wicket-keeper), Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, KM Asif, Deepak Chahar, Dwayne Bravo, Faf du Plessis, Imran Tahir, N Jagadeesan (wicket-keeper), Karn Sharma, Lungi Ngidi, Mitchell Santner, Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shardul Thakur, Sam Curran, Josh Hazlewood, R Sai Kishore, Moeen Ali, K Gowtham, Cheteshwar Pujara, Harishankar Reddy, Bhagath Varma, Hari Nishanth

Rajasthan: Sanju Samson (captain/wicket-keeper), Jos Buttler (wicket-keeper), Ben Stokes, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Manan Vohra, Anuj Rawat, Riyan Parag, David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Mahipal Lomror, Shreyas Gopal, Mayank Markande, Jofra Archer, Andrew Tye, Jaydev Unadkat, Kartik Tyagi, Shivam Dube, Chris Morris, Mustafizur Rahman, Chetan Sakariya, KC Cariappa, Liam Livingstone, Kuldip Yadav, Akash Singh

Chennai vs Rajasthan probable XI

Chennai will be a little bit concerned with the form of opener Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has scored just 10 runs in the first two matches of the season. The MS Dhoni-led side has always given a long rope to players even when going through a rough phase. However, the franchise might consider bringing in experienced Robin Uthappa in the playing XI in place of Gaikwad.

Furthermore, Chennai have received a massive boost as their South Africa pacer Lungi Ngidi has completed his mandatory seven-day quarantine and will be available for selection.

Chennai predicted XI: Faf du Plessis, Ruturaj Gaikwad/Robin Uthappa, Moeen Ali, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni (captain/wicket-keeper), Sam Curran, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo/Lungi Ngidi, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur

On the other hand, Rajasthan performed exceptionally well in the absence of their star all-rounder Ben Stokes, who has returned to England after sustaining a finger injury.

The franchise may consider making few changes to their side against Chennai. Their all-rounder Shivam Dube had another poor outing against Delhi, and he may get replaced by Shreyas Gopal in the playing XI.

Rajasthan might also bring back young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal in place of Manan Vohra.

Rajasthan predicted XI: Jos Buttler (wicket-keeper), Manan Vohra/Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson (captain), David Miller, Riyan Parag, Shivam Dube/Shreyas Gopal, Rahul Tewatia, Chris Morris, Jaydev Unadkat, Chetan Sakariya, Mustafizur Rahman

Chennai vs Rajasthan head-to-head record in Indian T20 League

Three-time Indian T20 League champions Chennai have a clear edge over Rajasthan in the head-to-head record. The two teams have faced each other 23 times in the high-profile league, with Chennai winning 14 while losing nine.

At the Wankhede Stadium, both Chennai and Rajasthan have won 50 percent of their matches. While MS Dhoni-led Chennai have won eight of the 16 games played at this venue, Rajasthan have registered five victories in 10 encounters.

Chennai vs Rajasthan match prediction: Who will win?

While both Chennai and Rajasthan are well-matched on paper, Chennai will hold the edge in the crucial clash, owing to their experience.

Furthermore, captain MS Dhoni has a tremendous Indian T20 League record against Rajasthan.

Best performers in Chennai vs Rajasthan

Top tip: Best batsmen

Chennai batsman Suresh Raina is tipped to score the maximum runs for his side against Rajasthan. Raina has a decent record against the Rajasthan franchise, amassing 609 runs in 21 matches with four fifties. The 34-year-old southpaw is the second-highest run-getter in the history of the Indian T20 League. He has scored 5430 runs in 195 games and is only behind Bangalore captain Virat Kohli.

In the case of Rajasthan, opener Jos Buttler is the ideal candidate to be the leading run-scorer in the latest Punjab vs Chennai showdown. The 30-year-old has scored 216 runs in 5 matches against Chennai, at a staggering average of 72 with two fifties to his name.

Top tip: Best bowlers

Ravindra Jadeja is favoured to be the wrecker-in-chief for Chennai against Rajasthan. Jadeja has 16 wickets in as many matches against Rajasthan and is keen to consolidate his 114 wickets in 186 games in the Indian T20 League. He is an asset for any side.

For Rajasthan, Jaydev Unadkat will be the bowler to watch out for against Chennai at the Wankhede. The 29-year-old silenced his critics as he picked up three wickets by conceding only 15 runs against Bangalore.

Top tip: All-rounders and wicket-keepers

Chennai possesses several top all-rounders in their line-up, namely Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, Dwayne Bravo and Moeen Ali. However, England’s Moeen Ali would be the preferred choice for the all-rounder spot due to his match-winning capabilities. Moeen has already scored 82 runs in two matches and also picked up a valuable wicket last game.

On the other hand, Chris Morris just showed why Rajasthan paid a hefty price for him by playing a blitzkrieg innings of 36 from 18 deliveries in the last game. He also picked up a wicket by conceding only 27 runs.

For the wicket-keeper position, MS Dhoni will be the preferred choice over Sanju Samson. Dhoni has taken 113 catches and completed 39 stumpings in the Indian T20 League history. He is the first wicket-keeper in the history of the T20 tournament to reach 150 dismissals.

MS Dhoni’s Team Chennai picked their 15th win over Team Punjab in the Indian T20 League on Friday, April 16, this time defeating them by six wickets in what was a rather low-scoring affair.

Wankhede’s wicket is known for being a batting paradise, but a Deepak Chahar masterclass had restricted Punjab to just 106/8 after they were put in to bat first. Such was Chennai’s dominance in the game that Punjab could only muster 26/4 in the powerplay overs, which is in fact their fourth-lowest powerplay score in the Indian T20 League.

The only player for Punjab who shone was Shahrukh Khan. The middle-order batsman scored 47 off 36 balls and is potentially the reason why Punjab could even cross the 100-run mark. A total of 106/8 is now Punjab sixth-lowest total in the league and the third-lowest team total in the first innings in the Indian T20 League.

There were several such records on the night and here we look at a few of them.

Deepak Chahar’s masterclass

A bowling figure of 4/13 is now is the best return for Chennai pacer Deepak Chahar in the Indian T20 League. This is, in fact, the first time that the 28-year-old has picked four wickets in his Indian T20 League career. Meanwhile, this figure helped him become the sixth-highest wicket-taker for Chennai in the league. This is now the third-best bowling spell by a Chennai bowler vs Punjab in the league.

Deepak Chahar's best bowling figures in Indian T20 League
Wickets Runs Opponent Venue Date
4 13 Punjab Wankhede Stadium 16 April 2021
3 15 Hyderabad Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium 22 May 2018
3 20 Kolkata MA Chidambaram Stadium 9 April 2019
3 26 Mumbai Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium 12 May 2019

Chahar has a knack for picking early wickets in the Indian T20 League and thus it does not come as a surprise that a whopping 73,47% of his total wickets (36/48) have come in the first six overs. Furthermore, while he has picked just two wickets between 7-15 overs, he has scalped 11 wickets between 16-20 overs.

Shahrukh Khan the only survivor

While Punjab kept on losing wickets, a certain Shahrukh Khan went on to play his best-ever Indian T20 League knock, scoring 47 off 36 balls. He scored 44.34% runs of his team’s total. The 25-year-old scored a majority of his runs (20) at mid-wicket and covers. Furthermore, a detailed bifurcation of his knock explains how he took the Chennai bowlers to the cleaners. While he couldn’t muster runs against the likes of Deepak Chahar and Sam Curran, he made Shardul Thakur his prey, smashing the pacer for 19 runs in 11 runs, hitting him at a strike rate of 172.72.

Moeen and Faf's impressive partnership

While Chennai opener Faf du Plessis remained unbeaten at 36, it was Moeen Ali’s performance that grabbed the attention. The England all-rounder, who came out to bat at No. 3, scored 46 off just 31 balls and missed out on his fourth Indian T20 League half-century by whiskers. Ali played a 66-run stand with du Plessis and scored 69.70% of runs (46) in the partnership.

Moeen Ali vs Punjab bowlers
Bowlers Runs Balls Strike Rate Run %
Arshdeep Singh 4 3 133.33 8.69
Jhye Richardson 1 1 100.00 2.17
Mohammed Shami 10 6 166.66 21.73
Murugan Ashwin 18 11 163.63 39.13
Riley Meredith 13 10 130.00 28.26

Murugan Ashwin finally got the Englishman off the crease but the spinner was, in fact, the most expensive bowler against Ali, conceding 18 runs off 11 balls. Ali’s effort guided Chennai to a win with 26 balls still remaining. This is their fourth-largest win in terms of balls remaining in the Indian T20 League. Three of their top five wins in terms of balls remaining have come in Mumbai.

Chennai all-rounder Moeen Ali urged his new Indian T20 League team to remove the logo of the alcohol brand from his jersey ahead of the 2021 season, and the three-time winners have agreed to his request.

The 33-year-old is a practising Muslim and his beliefs forbid him from consuming alcohol. The Englishman has been quite vocal about it in the past too and has always refrained himself from wearing any kit that promotes alcohol, be it for England or any other domestic he has played for. The England cricket team respect the culture and they too refrain from spraying champagne during trophy celebrations.

As far as Chennai are concerned, they have the logo of SNJ Distilleries, which is a liquor manufacturer, on their shirt, and the franchise has agreed to remove the logo from his matchday shirts. Moeen Ali was bought for a whopping price tag of INR 7 crore during the mini-auction in February after being released by Virat Kohli's team Bangalore.

He has played 19 matches in the Indian T20 League during his career, scoring 309 runs and accumulating 10 wickets. After being picked by the team, Ali commented that he was excited to play under the former captain of the Indian cricket team, saying that it is something 'on every player's wish list'.

"I've spoken to players who have played under MS and they tell me how he improves their game. I believe a great captain does that," Moeen was quoted as saying by the CSK website.

"I think it's something on every player's wish list to play under MS. I think it's the confidence and the clarity he gives people. It's exciting," he added.

The three-time champions will open their 2021 Indian T20 League season against Team Delhi on April 10 at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.

Three-time champions Chennai will look to regain lost glory as the Indian T20 League returns to familiar conditions in India this year.

MS Dhoni-led Chennai will face Team Delhi in their opening encounter of the Indian T20 League 2021 campaign at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 10.

Chennai had a dismal Indian T20 League 2020 season - which was held in UAE - as they finished seventh in the eight-team competition, thus failing to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in their history.

The team will look to turn things around by clinching their fourth title this season and here we analyse what they have in the offering for the 2021 season.

Team Chennai squad

Despite finishing at the penultimate spot in the points table last year, the Chennai team management retained most of their players. As Chennai entered the mini-auction with a purse of 9.90 crore, they reinforced their squad by buying England all-rounder Moeen Ali for crore and also roped in Karnataka all-rounder Krishnappa Gowtham for .25 crore, making him the most expensive uncapped player of all-time.

Interestingly, MS Dhoni’s team also surprised everyone by purchasing Team India’s Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara for 0 lakh. Chennai completed their squad by roping in M Harishankar Reddy,  Bhagath Varma and Hari Nishanth at their base price of 0 lakh.

Team Chennai squad for Indian T20 League 2021: MS Dhoni (captain and wicket-keeper), Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, KM Asif, Deepak Chahar, Dwayne Bravo, Faf du Plessis, Imran Tahir, N Jagadeesan (wicket-keeper), Karn Sharma, Lungi Ngidi, Mitchell Santner, Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shardul Thakur, Sam Curran, Josh Hazlewood, R Sai Kishore, Moeen Ali, K Gowtham, Cheteshwar Pujara, Harishankar Reddy, Bhagath Varma, Hari Nishanth.

Team Chennai strength and weakness

Strength

The presence of MS Dhoni will always be considered as Chennai’s biggest strength as they won three titles under him. Dhoni, with the most sixes in the 20th over of the competition, is expected to showcase his tenacity with the bat while bringing out the best out of his players as a captain given he is the only skipper with over 100 victories under his belt in the league. His use of spinners on the Indian pitches should make the team a tough outfit to face for any opposition.

The return of Suresh Raina to the Chennai squad is a massive boost for the franchise. The 34-year-old southpaw had withdrawn from the 2020 season of Indian T20 League citing personal reasons. Raina is currently the second highest run-getter in the league, only behind Bangalore captain Virat Kohli.

Weakness

The Chennai franchise might struggle to get going in the upcoming edition of the Indian T20 League as most of their top batsmen haven't played any cricket for some time. The likes of MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina retired from all forms of international cricket in 2020 and haven’t played any competitive cricket since the last edition of the Indian T20 league, while Ambati Rayudu - who also had announced retirement - made a U-turn and recently featured for Andhra Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021.

Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been out of action since January, having injured his thumb in India’s tour of Australia.

Who can be the highest run-scorer for Team Chennai?

Faf du Plessis was one of the few positives for the Chennai franchise in their dismal Indian T20 League campaign in UAE last year. Faf had amassed 449 runs in 13 matches at an average of 40.81 with four half-centuries to his name. MS Dhoni and Co. will once again bank on Faf to post huge totals on the board.

Who can be the highest wicket-taker for Team Chennai?

Chennai will hope that India pacer Shardul Thakur can continue his good form in the upcoming edition of the Indian T20 League as well. Thakur was the highest wicket-taker in both the T20I and ODI series against England as he helped the Men in Blue clinch both the limited-over series. The 29-year-old had scalped 10 wickets in 9 matches in the 2020 Indian T20 League and he will look to spearhead the Chennai attack this time around.

Where will Team Chennai finish in Indian T20 League 2021?

MS Dhoni-led Chennai might struggle to once again qualify for the playoffs in the Indian T20 League 2021. The lack of match practice might be a cause for concern not just for MS Dhoni but several of their key players, including Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja.
