Being captain isn’t simply about setting the field or calling heads or tails. Captains need to understand their teammates and adjust to different situations. Their decisions affect team mood, tactics, and results. For fans, the question of who's the best captain is always a fun yet heated debate. Here's a look at the top leaders who’ve best stood out on the field:

The mark of a good captain: What skills lead to greatness?

Great captaincy requires handling pressures that fans rarely notice. For instance, modern leaders must deal with media scrutiny and guide their teams through changes after retirement.

They also need to balance their roles between franchise and national duties. Their job goes well beyond the boundary rope, where calm judgment, communication, and a long-term vision show their value.

Here are the things that make a great cricket captain:

Win/loss ratios

A captain’s win/loss record gives a quick look at how well they’ve done. However, the full story is more than simple numbers. Winning often with a strong team can make the record look better than it is.

On the other hand, leading a weak or new team can hurt the record, even if the captain does a good job. Doing well under pressure, despite the odds, is a true mark of greatness that no numbers can measure.

Strength of opposition

Wins against weaker teams can make the numbers look nice, but they don’t tell much. It’s the tough, close games against strong sides that test a captain. These games show if a captain can stay calm and think fast. Playing well against the best teams shows real skill. Even if the team doesn’t always win, the captain earns respect.

Team progression

A great captain helps the team get better than before. This can show in higher rankings, a stronger bench, or a clearer playstyle. Even when the team is rebuilding, good leaders prepare for future wins. Real progress often comes from work done off the field, not only from what happens during the game.

Tactical decisions

Picking different bowlers or changing the batting order can win or lose matches. Great captains watch the game closely and change plans as things happen. They notice when the game swings or how the pitch is playing.

Using both feeling and planning, they can beat teams with better players. While some choices are easy, the brave and well-timed ones show real skill.

Player development

Captains help young players get better and support the experienced ones. A good leader makes a safe space where players can learn from mistakes and grow.

Trust and encouragement help players find their place in the team. Giving players real jobs can change their careers. Many top players say they did well because a captain believed in them early.

Versatility

Being a captain today means leading in Tests, ODIs, and T20s. Each game is different and needs a different direction. Changing from slow and steady play to fast and risky is not easy. Captains who can change their style for each game, place, and player’s need should be flexible. These captains often keep their teams strong for a long time.

The finest captains under the spotlight

Today’s top cricket teams owe much of their success to strong leaders. India, England, and Australia have improved because their captains bring the team together. Watching these captains shows how important they are for keeping and growing the best teams in cricket.

Here are the top cricket captains today:

Virat Kohli (India)

Virat Kohli led India’s Test team with bold captaincy and great batting. He scored 7,000 Test runs in only 138 innings, among the fastest in cricket history. Kohli played well in other countries and built a strong and tough team. His leadership changed Indian cricket by mixing a strong fighting spirit with helping young players.

Pat Cummins (Australia)

Pat Cummins stands out as Australia’s calm and smart captain. He has helped the team win major trophies while excelling as a bowler. Cummins is one of the fastest to take 150 Test wickets. He recorded one of the best bowling performances by an Australian captain with 6/23.

Kane Williamson (New Zealand)

Kane Williamson is renowned for his tactical genius and calmness under pressure. He leads New Zealand with quiet confidence, fostering a strong team spirit.

Over his career, he ranks among New Zealand’s most experienced leaders, having captained in nearly 100 ODIs. Williamson has also scored centuries in both innings of a Test match, demonstrating remarkable skill and steady focus.

Ben Stokes (England)

Ben Stokes leads England’s ‘Bazballstyle with bold and fearless play, transforming Test cricket through brave decisions and innovative tactics. As captain, he supports attacking play and taking risks instead of following old ways. His biggest record includes hitting the most sixes in Test history at 133. It shows the fast-paced style he brings, mixing fun with strong drive.

MS Dhoni (India)

MS Dhoni turned the Chennai team into a winning machine with ice-cold choices and strong trust in his players. He stayed calm even in tough moments and changed how people see captaincy. His top record includes the most stumpings in international cricket at 195. It pays tribute to his quick reflexes behind the stumps in high-stakes games.

Rohit Sharma (India)

Rohit Sharma shocked Indian cricket in 2023 with smart field moves and a calm mind. He is known for having the highest score in an innings in ODI history at 264 runs. He also has a total of 637 sixes in 499 international matches. These records show his timing, control, and focus. He changed power-hitting by mixing strength with smooth, clean shots.

Stats vs strategy: Which bears more weight?

While numbers show how a captain does, they aren't enough to show a leader's value. There are things that numbers can't measure, like wit, morale, and the inspiration they bring to the team.

In T20 cricket, where data is used a lot, leaders still need feeling and heart. As new stars change the field, the question of who's the best captain remains an ever-changing debate.

Kane Williamson’s legacy is already stamped and undeniable at this point. He is a figurehead in Kiwi cricket as he has been a consistent star throughout his career. Williamson has carved out a career that has put him alongside the modern-day greats. However, he has cemented himself as an all-time great who deserves more recognition.

Williamson is a consistently excellent batsman

Most of today’s cricket is filled with aggressive and fast-paced players. But Williamson sets himself apart with his classic technique, good composure and strong consistency. He excels across all formats of the game without compromising that style.

During his career, Williamson has amassed over 8,000 runs in Test matches. That is already a strong reason why he deserves to be a top batsman, but he finds ways to step up under pressure. He has scored centuries across many formats against many top-tier cricketing nations.

Beyond Test cricket, he has scored over 7,000 runs in One-Day International cricket and over 2,600 runs in T20I cricket. That kind of versatility across many formats shows he is one of the best. He knows how to step up and carry New Zealand across many innings, cementing himself as a star.

Williamson’s iconic reputation as New Zealand’s captain

Many players shine through individual brilliance, but Williamson stands out not only for his exceptional skills but also for being a great leader. He is regarded as one of the most impressive leaders in modern cricket, as seen with the team’s success. He led the Black Caps to the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup Final, but they came close to winning.

He redeemed himself and the team by leading them again two years later in the ICC World Test Championship, becoming the first-ever country to win the event. Furthermore, he succeeded due to his calm and thoughtful decision-making.

Apart from his leadership, he is also one of the most humble players you’ll see in cricket. Williamson is known for his grace when winning or losing, as he exudes the quiet authority that most cricketers would want to have.

Williamson has superb longevity

Since he debuted in international cricket in 2010, Williamson has become one of the most enduring players in cricket. He has faced some injuries throughout his career, but he has kept up being part of the New Zealand system. Any time his name is called, he steps up and delivers, which cements his legacy further.

He is the fastest Kiwi to score 7,000, 8,000, and 9,000 runs. Williamson has sustained excellence for a long time, which has proven he belongs alongside Kiwi legends like Martin Crowe and Brendon McCullum.

Australia's Steve Smith and New Zealand's Kane Williamson hold the record for the most hundreds in Test cricket among the ‘Fab Fourwith 32 tons each.

The Fab Four - short for ‘Fabulous Four- is a term coined by cricket pundits, which clubs together the top four Test batters of the modern era - India’s Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson.

While Smith has now hit 32 Test tons, Williamson also has notched 32 Test centuries since making his debut in 2010. In March 2023, he also became the only Kiwis player to hit six double centuries in the format when he achieved the feat against Sri Lanka.

Former England captain Joe Root is second on the list. Root is the first batter among the ‘Fab Fourto breach the 10,000-run mark in Test cricket. He achieved the feat in the first Test against New Zealand at the Lord’s in 2022.

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli has scored 29 Test centuries in his red-ball cricket career so far.

He is currently the fourth-most prolific batter among the ‘Fab Fourwith more than 8,000 runs in red-ball cricket.

Australia’s Steve Smith earlier equalled Virat Kohli’s tally for centuries with a 226-ball 131 that helped his team secure a draw against India in Sydney in 2021.

However, what makes Steve Smith stand out among the other 'Fab Four' batters is his batting average. The former Australia captain has scored more than 9,000 runs in over 100 Test matches at an average of almost 60, making him the most consistent batter among the rest.

Seddon Park is New Zealand’s fourth-largest cricket ground located in Hamilton.

Established in 1950, Seddon Park is named after Richard Seddon, the longest-serving Prime Minister of New Zealand.

Located close to the centre of Hamilton, the cricket venue is famous for its village green-style setting, affording a picnic atmosphere for spectators.

Apart from cricket, the stadium has been used for rugby union, rugby league and hockey matches.

Seddon Park hosted its first international cricket match, a One-Day International (ODI) played between hosts New Zealand and India in February 1981. New Zealand won the game by 57 runs.

Ten years later, it staged its first Test match between New Zealand and Sri Lanka. The match ended in a draw. Since then, it has hosted more than 20 Tests so far.

As per the New Zealand vs South Africa Test 2024 schedule, the first match will be played at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui before the two teams travel to Hamilton to play the second game at Seddon Park scheduled to begin on February 13.

Ranked fifth in the ICC men’s Test rankings, hosts New Zealand will be led by captain Tim Southee.

The Kiwis have also included the world’s top-ranked Test batter and former skipper Kane Williamson in the squad after he withdrew midway through the recently-concluded T20I series against Pakistan.

Apart from Williamson, New Zealand have few other injury concerns as wicketkeeper-batter Tom Blundell and pacer Kyle Jamieson are also doubtful for the opening Test.

Meanwhile, young right-arm pacer Will O’Rourke has been named in the squad for the second Test.

Having registered one win and one loss against Bangladesh, New Zealand are currently placed third in the WTC 2023-25 standings.

On the other hand, the South Africa cricket team will field a second-string squad in the upcoming Test series as a majority of their regular players are featuring in the SA20, the country’s top T20 competition.

As many as seven uncapped players have been included in the 14-man Test squad to be led by captain-elect Neil Brand.

Interestingly, Neil Brand is among the seven new faces who captained South Africa's A side during their recent series versus West Indies A.

Wicketkeeper-batter David Bedingham and Keegan Petersen are the only two cricketers in the squad that featured in South Africa’s impressive win over India in the first Test.

Khaya Zondo, Dane Paterson and Duanne Olivier have also been recalled to the Test squad.

The Proteas head into the series after being held to a 1-1 draw in the recently-concluded Test series. They are placed second in the WTC 2023-25 standings with 12 points from two matches.

Situated in the Hagley Park in the central city of Christchurch, the Hagley Oval has a seating capacity of 9,000 and is expandable to 18,000.

Hagley Oval staged its first international men’s cricket match, a one-day game played between Canada and Scotland during the 2014 Cricket World Cup Qualifier in January 2014. Scotland won the match by 170 runs.

It later staged its first Test played between hosts New Zealand and Sri Lanka in December 2014. The hosts won the Test by eight wickets.

Five years later, the Hagley Oval staged its first T20 international in November 2019. England beat New Zealand by seven wickets in that game.

Since then, it has hosted nine T20 internationals in men’s cricket. Let’s have a look at Hagley Oval T20I records and stats:
