The engine at the heart of City’s defence, while Ilkay Gundogan may not always get the plaudits reserved for the likes of Bernardo Silva or Kevin de Bruyne, his importance to this City side cannot be underestimated. A contributor both in attack and defence, Gundogan will relish coming up against Bayern in his native Germany. The German international has bagged five goals and just as many assists this season, and it wouldn’t come as a surprise if he manages to be on the scoresheet against City. After all, he’s proven time and again in the past that he’s the man for the big occasions.

Top tip: Best defender - Joao Cancelo

Joao Cancelo, who is on loan from Man City at Bayern, will be eager to make a positive impression against his parent club. He came on as a substitute in the first leg and didn’t have much of a say in the action. However, with Bayern chasing the match, Cancelo is likely to start thanks to his attacking prowess. He’s got three goals and nine assists over the course of the season while representing both Bayern and City. Expect Cancelo to be at his explosive best against City.

Top tip: Best goalkeeper - Yann Sommer

Yann Sommer can expect another busy night between the post after letting in three goals against City in the first leg. A reliable and consistent goalkeeper, Sommer joined Munich from Borussia Monchengladbach in the January transfer market and has kept his fair share of clean sheets for the Bavarians, making some great saves along the way. He will once again be under the pump against City, meaning the more saves he makes the more fantasy points you earn with him in your team.

Manchester City have dominated the domestic football scene in England for the past two campaigns, but have been found wanting this season. Pep Guardiola’s side have fallen well behind Liverpool in the title race, leaving much work to do for the Cityzens ahead of the next campaign.

Regarded as one of the best in England only a few years ago, John Stones�?fall from grace has been rather swift. Injury issues and a loss of confidence has resulted in a drastic reduction of his game time this season.

There are several Premier League clubs interested in signing him and Guardiola himself is eyeing defensive additions. But given Stones�?age and the early form that he had shown at the club, Pep might fancy giving him another opportunity rather than severely depleting his options at the back.

Nicolas Otamendi

The erroneous 32-year-old has been preferred over John Stones at times this season and is contracted with the club till 2022. But with Guardiola looking to sign new defenders, it could be Otamendi whose name ends up on the chopping block given his age.

The 19-year-old has been used sparingly by Guardiola this season, but every time he has been given an opportunity, Garcia has done reasonably well. Benjamin Mendy

Signed amid much fanfare in 2017, Benjamin Mendy’s career at Manchester City has been blighted by injuries, one after the other. Nevertheless, when fit, the Frenchman is a great asset and has a future at the club.

Oleksandr Zinchenko

The versatile Ukrainian hasn’t been at his best this season. But his adaptability offers great value to this Manchester City side. Having signed a long-term contract less than a year ago, he is going nowhere.

Kyle Walker

Another full-back who penned a long-term contract in June last year, Walker is a guaranteed starter week in week out for Guaridola.

Joao Cancelo

Signed last summer from Juventus, it has been far from smooth sailing for Cancelo at Manchester City. The Portuguese hasn’t been able to displace Walker from the starting XI and hasn’t been used regularly by the manager.

This has led to speculations over his future, with City reportedly considering a swap with Barcelona for Nelson Semedo. Despite the rumours, Cancelo is someone who fits into Guardiola’s philosophy and the manager himself has claimed that the full-back is a long-term addition for the club.

Rodri

The club record signing has stepped into the defensive midfield role and performed admirably in his debut season.

Fernandinho

At 34, Fernandinho doesn’t have a lot of football at the top level left in him but the Brazilian has reinvented himself as a centre-back this season and has been a key player for Guardiola. Moreover, the veteran signed a new one-year contract in January earlier this year.

Ilkay Gundogan

The German midfielder has thrived in the past couple of seasons under Guardiola, putting behind all injury issues that bothered him early on and signed a new contract till 2023 in August 2019.

David Silva

The man who carried the creative mantle for Manchester City for the entire decade, David Silva is out of contract at the end of the season and has made it clear he wishes to return to Spain. Premier League will bid goodbye to a legend.

Kevin De Bruyne

The best midfielder in the Premier League without a doubt, De Bruyne has been the chief driving force behind Manchester City’s success under Guardiola. The potential lack of Champions League football for the next season due to the FIFA-imposed ban could prompt other big clubs to make a move. But a transfer at this juncture is extremely unlikely.

Phil Foden

The man earmarked to replace David Silva in the first-team by Guardiola, Foden showed his class in City’s Carabao Cup triumph against Aston Villa in February. Expect more of the same next season.

Bernardo Silva

The Portuguese’s form has experienced a slight dip in comparison to last season but his ability on the ball and the versatility he offers makes him a vital player for Manchester City. Bernardo Silva signed a long-term contract only last year.

After a rather dull debut season, Algerian Riyad Mahrez has stepped it up a notch this season and grown into a key player for the Cityzens.

Having shown signs of potential for a number of years now, Gabriel Jesus has added the element of consistency to his game this season. He seems ready to carry the mantle of the club’s premier centre-forward if and when Aguero decides it is time to move on.

The 2019/20 Premier League season is off to a flyer with big names like Sergio Aguero and Sadio Mane stepping up their game once again for their respective teams. However, the English clubs opened their coffers generously to secure the services of some of the promising up-and-comers in European football.

Here we look at the top signings in the summer transfer window that are tipped to surpass the expectations of their managers and fans alike.

Harry Maguire (Leicester City to Manchester United)

Once a solid figure in Leicester City’s back line, Harry Maguire decided to leave the shores of the Foxes to make his dream move to Manchester United. The 26-year-old English centre-back's signing was of utmost importance for the Red Devils. With a hefty build and a phenomenal track record of being fit and less injury-prone, Maguire can surely take up the charge of the defensive duties at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is getting a player who is good in the air, capable of helping the team from set pieces, can retrieve balls and has satisfactory long passing skills. This clearly shows why the folks at Old Trafford shelled out a whopping £80 million to procure him.

Nicolas Pepe (Lille to Arsenal)

Nicolas Pepe’s record at Lille in Ligue1 was nothing short of spectacular. He netted 22 goals and provided 11 assists in his previous season in France. Arsenal was convinced that Pepe is surely their guy and to leave him hanging for any other club would be a grave mistake. Instead they decided to capitalise on his form and secured his services for £72 million.

The talented 24-year-old forward should settle into the Gunners' setup without much hassle, especially with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette present to help him out.

Rodrigo (Atletico Madrid to Manchester City)

Manchester City seemed to have found an ideal replacement for Fernandinho in the 23-year-old Spanish midfielder Rodrigo Hernandez. An efficient stalwart in stopping counter-attacks and passing the ball with purpose, the Citizens will be delighted to have a young gun dictating the play from the midfield.

His impressive performance against Liverpool in the Community Shield was noted by manager Pep Guardiola. He clearly fits into the vision of Guardiola’s style of play and will be a regular player on the pitch. City shelled out £60 million for the Spaniard. 

Joao Cancelo (Juventus to Manchester City)

Manchester City opted to go for Joao Cancelo as a backup for the right-back position currently occupied by Kyle Walker. At Juventus, Cancelo’s role as a right-back was to push up often, playing as a right winger at times. His work rate was the key factor that impressed Guardiola as he demands from his players a high possession and even higher tempo when on the ball.

The Portuguese right-back ticked all the boxes and was brought to the Etihad for a deal that cost Citizens £60 million, with Danilo moving to Juventus as a part of the deal.

Tanguy Ndombele (Lyon to Tottenham Hotspur)

The 23-year-old Frenchman unarguably ranks among the top five central midfielders in European football at present. Due to his inherent versatility to tackle the attacking prowess of top-class teams, Tottenham Hotspur offered Lyon £65 million to get him to North London.

He will be useful in strengthening the defence system of Spurs and will be highly effective in encounters where Mauricio Pochettino need an X-factor to overcome strong oppositions. Tanguy Ndombele will be a pivotal part of Spurs campaign this season.
