The Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 started with an enthralling 2-2 draw played between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Mumbai City FC at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Friday, September 13.

Last season’s ISL Shield champions Mohun Bagan took an early lead courtesy of an own goal from José Luis Espinosa Arroyo before defender Alberto Rodríguez doubled the lead for the Mariners in the 28th minute.

However, reigning ISL Cup winner Mumbai City later bounced back in the second half as goals from José Luis Espinosa Arroyo and Thaer Krouma helped the visitors salvage a point.

Organised by the AIFF and FSDL, as many as 13 teams are competing in the ISL 2024-25.

Bengaluru FC, Chennaiyin FC, East Bengal FC, FC Goa, Hyderabad FC, Jamshedpur FC, Kerala Blasters FC, Mohammedan SC, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, Mumbai City FC, NorthEast United FC, Punjab FC and Odisha FC are the 13 teams that are featuring in the 11th edition of the ISL.

Apart from the league title, all eyes will be on the race for the Golden Glove award in the ongoing edition of the league.

Following the conclusion of the league every year, the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets is awarded the ISL Golden Glove.

Mumbai City FC’s Phurba Lachenpa, Amrinder Singh of Odisha FC and Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s Vishal Kaith registered the most clean sheets in the ISL last season. All three goalkeepers recorded 13 clean sheets.

However, Phurba Lachenpa pipped Amrinder Singh and Vishal Kaith to claim the ISL Golden Glove award after registering 13 clean sheets in lesser matches.

Former FC Goa goalkeeper Jan Seda bagged the ISL Golden Glove award in the inaugural season in 2014.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru FC custodian Gurpreet Singh Sandhu has won the Golden Glove the most times in ISL history. Sandhu clinched the award in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.

Interestingly, Prabhsukhan Singh Gill was the youngest to win the award at 21 years and three months with Kerala Blasters in the 2021-22 season.

The likes of NorthEast United FC goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh, Mohammedan Sporting Club’s Padam Chettri and Ravi Kumar of Punjab FC are in contention for the ISL 2024-25 Golden Glove race. Know the goalkeepers with the most clean sheets in ISL 2024-25 season.

While Roy Krishna also netted 13 goals in 25 matches for Odisha FC last season, Dimitrios Diamantakos bagged the ISL Golden Boot award for a better goals-to-minutes ratio.

Elano (2014), Stiven Mendoza (2015), Marcelinho (2016), Coro (2017-18, 2018-19), Nerijus Valskis (2019-20), Igor Angulo (2020-21) and Bartholomew Ogbeche (2021-22) are the previous ISL Golden Boot Winners.

Since the inception of the Indian Super League (ISL) in 2014, there have been six ISL winners who have claimed the coveted title at least once.

In the previous editions, erstwhile ATK have been the most dominant team, having secured the title three times. Hyderabad FC, Chennaiyin FC, Bengaluru FC, Mumbai City  FC, and ATK Mohun Bagan are the other sides, which complete the ISL winners list.

Here are the ISL winners from every edition of Indian Super League:

ISL 2014 winner �Atletico de Kolkata 

In the inaugural season, ATK, formerly known as Atlético de Kolkata, were crowned the ISL season 1 winner as they defeated Kerala Blasters 1-0 in the final, courtesy an injury-time goal by Indian midfielder Mohammed Rafique. 

Under head coach Antonio Lopez Habas and marquee player Luis Garcia, ATK had finished third in the ISL table at the end of the league stages, four points behind table-toppers Chennaiyin FC.

The 2014 season featured eight teams, each playing 14 matches during the regular season.

ISL 2015 winner �Chennaiyin FC

After suffering heartbreak in the 2014 ISL semi-finals, Chennaiyin FC defeated FC Goa 3-2 in a mouth-watering 2015 ISL final at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa. 

Chennaiyin FC had claimed the title with the help from their talisman Stiven Mendoza, who won the 'Hero of the League' award as well as the ISL Golden Boot, having scored 13 goals that season.

Interestingly, during the early stage of 2015 ISL season, Chennaiyin were placed last in the league table. The �/span>Marina Machans�then won four consecutive games to qualify for the play-offs, finishing third in the point table. 

ISL 2016 winner �Atletico de Kolkata

In the 2016 edition of the Indian Super League, ATK secured the title for the second time after defeating Kerala Blasters in a nail-biting penalty shootout at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi, Kerala.

With more than 80,000 fans in the stadium, Blasters took the lead in the 37th minute through Mohammed Rafi. However, just after seven minutes, Henrique Sereno equalised for ATK. With the score still at 1� after extra-time, the match eventually went into a penalty shootout. 

ATK won the shoot-out 4� and became two-time champions courtesy some brilliant saves from their keeper Debjit Majumder.

ISL 2017-18 winner �Chennaiyin FC

This was the year when All India Football Federation handed ISL the top-tier tag from Asian Football Confederation (AFC), replacing I-League. 

ISL expanded with the inclusion of Bengaluru FC and Jamshedpur FC, with a play-off slot to play for in the AFC Cup.

Under head coach John Gregory, Chennaiyin FC defeated Bengaluru FC 3-2 to claim their second ISL title at Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru.

Earlier in the league stages, Bengaluru FC had accumulated 40 points from their 18 games to finish eight points clear of Chennaiyin, who had finished second in the points table. Goa and Pune City were the other two teams who qualified for the 2017-18 ISL play-offs.

ISL 2018-19 winner �Bengaluru FC

In the 2018-19 edition of the tournament, Sunil Chhetri-led Bengaluru FC were hot favourites to be crowned the ISL season 5 winner.

As it turned out, Bengaluru FC secured their maiden title by defeating FC Goa 1� in the final at Mumbai Football Arena. Bengaluru FC’s Rahul Bheke scored the winner from a corner in the 117th minute.

As in the earlier edition of the tournament, Bengaluru had topped the ISL league stages in 2018-19 season.

In the semi-finals, while Bengaluru defeated NorthEast United 4-2 in two legs, Goa thrashed Mumbai City 5-2.

ISL 2019-20 winner �Atletico de Kolkata

Having experienced two disappointing seasons, ATK re-appointed Antonio Lopez Habas as their head coach for the 2019-20 ISL season.

The decision turned out to be successful as ATK became the first club to win the ISL thrice after they defeated Chennaiyin FC 3-1 in the 2019-20 ISL final.

In the finals, ATK goal-keeper Arindam Bhattacharya showed his class to help the white and red brigade clinch the coveted title.

For the champions, Roy Krishna and David Williams were the stand-out performers throughout the tournament.

ISL 2020-21 winner �Mumbai City FC

Ahead of the seventh edition of the Indian Super League, FC Goa’s former head coach Sergio Lobera was handed the reins of Mumbai City FC to change the fortunes of the club. As it turned out, it was a masterstroke as Mumbai City FC won their maiden ISL title by defeating ATK Mohun Bagan 2-1 at the Fatorda Stadium.

The Islanders are only the second team, after Bengaluru FC in 2018-19, to finish on top of the league and win the final in the same season. Mumbai, thus, completed a rare double of winning the ISL title after clinching the League Winners Shield and securing a place in the 2022 AFC Champions League.

ISL 2021-22 winner �Hyderabad FC

Hyderabad FC defeated Kerala Blasters FC 3-1 in the penalty shootout to clinch their maiden Indian Super League title at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, Goa.

Under the tutelage of Manolo Márquez, Hyderabad had earlier finished second in the league phase with 38 points from 20 matches, five points behind table-toppers Jamshedpur FC. The Nizams later beat ATK Mohun Bagan 3-2 on aggregate in the ISL 2021-22 semi-finals to book their place in the final.

For Hyderabad FC, striker Bartholomew Ogbeche was the standout performer as he bagged the Golden Boot award by netting 18 goals in 20 matches.

ISL 2022-23 winner �ATK Mohun Bagan

After finishing third in the league stage, ATK Mohun Bagan overcame Hyderabad FC via penalties over the two-legged semi-finals

They got the better of Bengaluru FC via penalties in the final at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa. Two goals from Dimitri Petratos - their top goal-scorer for the campaign- in the final against the Blues meant that the game ended at 2-2 at fulltime and eventually led to a penalty shootout, which the Mariners won 4-3.

ISL 2023-24 winner �Mumbai City FC

Mumbai City FC clinched their second ISL title after beating Mohun Bagan Super Giant 3-1 in the 2023-24 final at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.

Jason Cummings scored the opening goal of the match in the 44th minute to put Mohun Bagan ahead. However, goals from Jorge Pereyra Díaz, Bipin Singh Thounaojam and Jakub Vojtuš in the second half helped Mumbai City register a comprehensive win in the end.

The Indian Super League 2023-24 began with Kerala Blasters�2-1 victory over Bengaluru FC in the opening fixture at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi on September 21.

Bengaluru FC’s Keziah Veendorp opened the scoring with an unfortunate own goal to provide Kerala Blasters the lead in the 52nd minute. The hosts soon doubled the lead courtesy Adrian Luna’s strike in the 69th minute. 

Striker Curtis Main netted a consolation goal for the visitors who went down in the closely-fought encounter.

Mumbai City FC’s Jorge Pereyra Diaz, Kerala Blasters�Adrian Luna, Mohun Bagan Super Giant duo of Dimitri Petratos and Jason Cummings are the leading players contesting for the ISL 2023-24 Golden Boot award.

Among Indians, NorthEast United FC’s Parthib Gogoi and Manvir Singh of Mohun Bagan are strong contenders to finish as the leading goal-scorer in ISL season 10.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant will square off against Mumbai City FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 final at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Saturday, May 4.

Under the tutelage of Antonio Lopez Habas, Mohun Bagan beat Odisha FC 3-2 in the two-legged semi-final to book a place in their second consecutive ISL final.

Earlier, Mohun Bagan won their maiden ISL League Shield after they finished at the top of the ISL 2023-24 standings following the completion of the league stage with 48 points from 22 games. The Mariners pipped Mumbai City by just a solitary point to bag the coveted ISL League Winners Shield.

With the ISL Shield win, Mohun Bagan have qualified for the group stage of the 2024-25 Asian Champions League 2.

On the other hand, Mumbai City defeated FC Goa 5-2 on aggregate in the other semi-final to secure a spot in their second ISL final.

Led by former head coach Sergio Lobera, Mumbai City pipped ATK Mohun Bagan (now Mohun Bagan) 2-1 in the 2020-21 final to clinch their first ISL title.

Mohun Bagan, under their previous brand name ATK Mohun Bagan, have also won the ISL title once after they beat Bengaluru FC on penalties in the 2022-23 final.

Interestingly, both Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City replaced their respective head coaches this season.

While Antonio Lopez Habas took charge after Juan Ferrando was sacked in January, Mumbai City appointed Petr Kratky as their new head coach after Des Buckingham left mid-season to join EFL League One outfit Oxford United.

Mohun Bagan vs Mumbai City head-to-head 

Mumbai City have a superior head-to-head record against Mohun Bagan, winning 11 of the 25 matches that they have played so far. Mohun Bagan have registered seven victories while the other seven games have ended in draws.

In the Mohun Bagan vs Mumbai City ISL head-to-head, the record favours the Islanders. Mumbai City have won six of the nine games while Mohun Bagan have secured just one win so far. Two ISL matches have ended in stalemates.

The last time these two sides met, Mohun Bagan beat Mumbai City 2-1 in the final league stage match of the ISL 2023-24 season at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.

Indian Super League organizers Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) introduced the ISL League Winners Shield during the 2019-20 season. 

The ISL League Winners Shield list currently features three teams - Jamshedpur FC, Mumbai City FC, FC Goa and Mohun Bagan Super Giant.

The ISL �/strong>League Winners Shield�is awarded to the Indian Super League club topping the league stage of Indian football’s top flight. Along with the award, the winning club also gets a cash prize of INR 50 Lakh.

More pertinently, the League winners directly qualify for the group stage of the AFC Champions League.

During the ISL 2019-20 season, FC Goa became the first Indian club to participate in the AFC Champions League after the Gaurs topped the league stage with 39 points from 18 matches.

The following season, Mumbai City FC became the first club to win both the ISL League Winners Shield and the ISL title in the same edition. 

After the Islanders topped the league phase with 40 points from 20 matches, they defeated ATK Mohun Bagan 2-1 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, Goa to clinch the ISL 2020-21 title.

Mumbai City FC are the first club to win the ISL League Winners Shield twice. They achieved the feat after winning in the ISL 2022-23 season.

Jamshedpur FC have won the ISL League Winners Shield in 2021-22 season. The Red Miners lifted the Shield after finishing on the top of the ISL 2021-22 standings with 43 points from 20 games.

Meanwhile, Mohun Bagan Super Giant are the latest team to join the elite list after they pipped Mumbai City FC to win their first ISL League Winners Shield in the 2023-24 season. 

With a nail-biting 2-1 win over the Islanders in the final league stage match of the season, Mohun Bagan clinched the coveted title for the first time in their rich history.
