The UEFA Champions League 2024-25 season started on September 17, 2024 and will run till May 31, 2025.

Organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), the UEFA Champions League 2024-25 is the 70th season of Europe's elite club competition and the 33rd season since it was rebranded from the European Champion Clubs' Cup to the UEFA Champions League.

The UEFA Champions League 2024-25 is the first season to be staged under a new format.

As per the Champions League new format, as many as 36 clubs are participating in the new league phase in comparison to the previous 32-team group stage system. The new UCL format has offered four more teams the opportunity to compete against the best clubs in Europe.

While previously the 32 participants were divided into eight groups of four, the Champions League 2024-25 new format is witnessing these 36 teams participate in a single league competition in which all the 36 competing clubs will be ranked together in one big league table.

Arsenal, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Man City, Atlético de Madrid, Barcelona, Girona, Real Madrid, Bayern, Dortmund, Leipzig, Leverkusen, Stuttgart, Atalanta, Bologna, Inter, Juventus, Milan, Brest, Lille, Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain, Salzburg, Sturm Graz, Feyenoord, PSV Eindhoven, Benfica, Sporting CP, Club Brugge, GNK Dinamo, Sparta Praha, Celtic, Crvena Zvezda, Slovan Bratislava, Young Boys and Shakhtar Donetsk are the teams competing for the UEFA Champions League 2024-25 title.

According to the UCL 2024-25 format, every team will play eight matches each in the new league phase, four at home and four away.

Under the former group stage system, each club used to face the other three opponents in their group twice in a home-and-away format. 

Every result will determine the overall ranking in the new league phase with three points being awarded for a win and one for a draw.

The top eight teams in the league will directly qualify for the round of 16 while the teams placed ninth to 24th will compete in a two-legged knock-out phase playoff to secure their path to the last 16 of the competition. 

Teams that will finish 25th or lower will be eliminated from the competition with no access to the UEFA Europa League.

In the knockout stage, clubs that finish between ninth and 16th will be seeded in the knockout phase playoff draw and will face a team placed 17th to 24th, with the return leg scheduled at home.

The eight winners in the knockout phase playoffs will advance to the Champions League round of 16. These teams will clash with the top-eight finishers, who will seeded in the round of 16.

From the round of 16 onwards, the UEFA Champions League will continue to follow its existing format of knockout rounds leading to the final staged at a neutral venue selected by UEFA. 

Furthermore, the number of matches in the Champions League 2024-25 new format has been increased from 125 to 189.

Just like previous editions, all Champions League 2024-25 matches will be played in midweek in order to take into consideration the domestic calendar of various leagues across Europe.

The UEFA Champions League 2024-25 final will be played at Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany on Saturday, May 31, 2025.

Real Madrid are the defending champions of the UEFA Champions League after they defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the UCL 2023-24 final at the Wembley Stadium in London, England.

With the win, Real Madrid claimed their record-extending 15th European Cup title, and their sixth in 11 years.

Several top footballers including the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Harry Kane, Viktor Gyokeres, Florian Wirtz, Erling Haaland, Raphinha, Jonathan David and Vinícius Júnior are in the UEFA Champions League top scorers 2024-25 race.

England will host Ireland in a Group B2 match of the UEFA Nations League 2024-25 at the Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday, November 17.

England started their current UEFA Nations League campaign with a 2-0 win against the same opponent in Dublin two months ago. They scored an identical win against Finland before tasting their first and only defeat in the tournament against Greece. 

However, England bounced back with consecutive victories against Finland and Greece to move to the top of the table. They will look to win their last game and finish on top of Group B2 to gain automatic promotion to League A in the next edition.

England captain and star striker Harry Kane leads the goalscoring charts for the home team alongside Declan Rice and Jack Grealish with two goals while Trent Alexander Arnold and Jude Bellingham have scored a goal each.

Ireland will enter the contest on the back of their hard-fought 1-0 win over Finland in their last group game. After losing the first two games, Ireland recovered well with two wins from the next three matches and would be keen to close their group engagements with a win.

England are currently fourth in the FIFA Men’s football rankings whereas Ireland are placed 63rd as per the latest list.

The UEFA Nations League 2024-25 has a total of 54 teams split into four leagues based on their international ranking. Three leagues A, B and C contain four groups of four teams each whereas League D has two groups of three teams.

Teams in League A will vie for the UEFA Nations League Final that is scheduled to be held in June 2025. All the four group winners and runners-up in League A will play a double-legged quarter-finals with the winners proceeding to play the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, the four group winners in Leagues B and C, as well as the two group winners in League D, are automatically promoted to Leagues A, B and C, respectively. 

The third-ranked teams of League A and the runners-up of League B, as well as the third-ranked teams of League B and the runners-up of League C, will play a home-and-away promotion-relegation playoff.

The fourth-placed teams in Leagues A and B are automatically relegated to Leagues B and C respectively. The two lowest-ranked fourth-placed teams in League C, meanwhile, are relegated to League D.

England finished third in the inaugural edition of the UEFA Nations League in 2019 after beating Switzerland on penalties in the third-place playoff match.

The Premier League Golden Boot is an annual football award bestowed to the leading goalscorer in the Premier League.

Since the inception of the Premier League in 1992, there have been 26 different players to win the Premier League Golden Boot in the last three decades.

Teddy Sheringham won the inaugural Premier League Golden Boot in 1993. Playing for Tottenham Hotspur, the former England forward netted 22 goals in 41 games to bag the prestigious award.

Later in 1994, Newcastle United’s Andy Cole won the Premier League Golden Boot after he scored 34 goals in 40 games that season.

Alan Shearer then became the first player to win the award in three consecutive seasons. He claimed the Premier League Golden Boot in 1994-95, 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons.

In 1999, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Dwight Yorke were the first non-English and non-European winners, respectively, when they shared the award with Michael Owen.

Legendary Arsenal striker Thierry Henry has the most Premier League Golden Boot awards. He won the award on four occasions in 2001-02, 2003-04, 2004-05 and 2005-06.

Thierry Henry also became the second player after Alan Shearer to win the award in three successive seasons.

Meanwhile, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland scripted history as he scored the most goals to win the Premier League Golden Boot.

In the 2022-23 season, Erling Haaland won the award after he scored 36 goals in just 35 matches. Haaland once again bagged the award in the 2023-24 season with 27 goals in 31 games.

Former Chelsea forward Nicolas Anelka netted the fewest goals to bag the Golden Boot outright with 19 goals in 2008-09.

However, the all-time record for lowest number of goals scored to be presented the award is 18 goals, which was achieved during the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons.

Chris Sutton, Dion Dublin and Michael Owen shared the award with 18 goals in 1998, while the same thing was repeated by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Dwight Yorke and Michael Owen in 1999.

The England national football team will host Brazil in a high-profile international friendly at the Wembley Stadium in England.

Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo is the top scorer of 2023 with 53 goals.

Playing for his club Al Nassr FC, Cristiano Ronaldo netted a brace against Al Ittihad Club in the recent Saudi Pro League clash to become the leading goal-scorer in 2023.

Ronaldo scored his 52nd and 53rd goal of the calendar year after converting two penalties in Al Nassr's 5-2 win over Al Ittihad at the Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium.

With the two goals, Ronaldo pipped Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe to have the most goals in 2023.

Both Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe have scored 52 goals in 2023.

The UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers started on March 23, 2023 and will conclude on March 26, 2024. 

Organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying tournament will determine the 23 UEFA member men's national teams that will join the automatically qualified host team Germany in the UEFA Euro 2024 main tournament.

The 17th edition of the UEFA European Championship is scheduled to be held in 10 venues in Germany from June 14 to July 14 next year.

As many as 53 teams are currently competing in the Euro 2024 qualifying tournament. These participating teams have been divided into 10 groups, with seven groups comprising five teams and three groups featuring six teams.  

According to the format, the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers are being played in a home-and-away, round-robin format on double matchdays in March, June, September, October, and November 2023. The top two teams from each group will qualify directly for the final tournament.

After the conclusion of the qualifying group stage, the remaining three teams will be decided through the play-offs, to be held in March 2024. 

Meanwhile, Kazakhstan’s Maksim Samorodov scored the first goal in the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying tournament against Slovenia in their Group H clash on matchday 1. 

Despite Maksim’s early strike in the 23rd minute, Kazakhstan went down to Slovenia 1-2 at the Astana Arena in Kazakhstan.

The UEFA Champions League 2023-24 season started on September 19, 2023 and will run till June 1, 2024.

As per the UCL 2023-24 format, these 32 clubs from Europe's top football leagues have been divided into eight groups of four teams each.

Group A comprises Bayern Munich, Copenhagen, Galatasaray and Manchester United, while Arsenal, Lens, PSV and Sevilla are placed in Group B.

Braga, Napoli, Real Madrid and Union Berlin are clubbed in Group C, while Group D features Benfica, Inter Milan, RB Salzburg and Real Sociedad.

Group E includes Atletico Madrid, Celtic, Feyenoord and Lazio, while the likes of AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Newcastle United and PSG are placed in Group F.

The UCL 2023-24 matches will be played in a home-and-away format and the top two teams from each group will advance to the knockouts.

The England national football team will host North Macedonia in their Group C UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers at Old Trafford in Manchester, England. The match will kick off at 12:15 Indian Standard Time (IST) on Tuesday, June 20.

During England’s UEFA EURO 2024 qualifiers campaign opener, Harry Kane netted his 54th goal of the English and became England’s top scorer of all-time.

The Tottenham Hotspur legend scored his 54th goal in his 81st appearance to surpass Wayne Rooney’s tally of 53 goals in 120 appearances for the Three Lions.

Harry Kane

Harry Kane is the fastest player to reach 50 goals for the Three Lions and the current English skipper took just 81 games to net his 54th England strike to become the country’s all-time leading scorer. He scored in his first England appearance during a 4-0 win over Lithuania in 2015.
