Being captain isn’t simply about setting the field or calling heads or tails. Captains need to understand their teammates and adjust to different situations. Their decisions affect team mood, tactics, and results. For fans, the question of who's the best captain is always a fun yet heated debate. Here's a look at the top leaders who’ve best stood out on the field:

The mark of a good captain: What skills lead to greatness?

Great captaincy requires handling pressures that fans rarely notice. For instance, modern leaders must deal with media scrutiny and guide their teams through changes after retirement.

They also need to balance their roles between franchise and national duties. Their job goes well beyond the boundary rope, where calm judgment, communication, and a long-term vision show their value.

Here are the things that make a great cricket captain:

Win/loss ratios

A captain’s win/loss record gives a quick look at how well they’ve done. However, the full story is more than simple numbers. Winning often with a strong team can make the record look better than it is.

On the other hand, leading a weak or new team can hurt the record, even if the captain does a good job. Doing well under pressure, despite the odds, is a true mark of greatness that no numbers can measure.

Strength of opposition

Wins against weaker teams can make the numbers look nice, but they don’t tell much. It’s the tough, close games against strong sides that test a captain. These games show if a captain can stay calm and think fast. Playing well against the best teams shows real skill. Even if the team doesn’t always win, the captain earns respect.

Team progression

A great captain helps the team get better than before. This can show in higher rankings, a stronger bench, or a clearer playstyle. Even when the team is rebuilding, good leaders prepare for future wins. Real progress often comes from work done off the field, not only from what happens during the game.

Tactical decisions

Picking different bowlers or changing the batting order can win or lose matches. Great captains watch the game closely and change plans as things happen. They notice when the game swings or how the pitch is playing.

Using both feeling and planning, they can beat teams with better players. While some choices are easy, the brave and well-timed ones show real skill.

Player development

Captains help young players get better and support the experienced ones. A good leader makes a safe space where players can learn from mistakes and grow.

Trust and encouragement help players find their place in the team. Giving players real jobs can change their careers. Many top players say they did well because a captain believed in them early.

Versatility

Being a captain today means leading in Tests, ODIs, and T20s. Each game is different and needs a different direction. Changing from slow and steady play to fast and risky is not easy. Captains who can change their style for each game, place, and player’s need should be flexible. These captains often keep their teams strong for a long time.

The finest captains under the spotlight

Today’s top cricket teams owe much of their success to strong leaders. India, England, and Australia have improved because their captains bring the team together. Watching these captains shows how important they are for keeping and growing the best teams in cricket.

Here are the top cricket captains today:

Virat Kohli (India)

Virat Kohli led India’s Test team with bold captaincy and great batting. He scored 7,000 Test runs in only 138 innings, among the fastest in cricket history. Kohli played well in other countries and built a strong and tough team. His leadership changed Indian cricket by mixing a strong fighting spirit with helping young players.

Pat Cummins (Australia)

Pat Cummins stands out as Australia’s calm and smart captain. He has helped the team win major trophies while excelling as a bowler. Cummins is one of the fastest to take 150 Test wickets. He recorded one of the best bowling performances by an Australian captain with 6/23.

Kane Williamson (New Zealand)

Kane Williamson is renowned for his tactical genius and calmness under pressure. He leads New Zealand with quiet confidence, fostering a strong team spirit.

Over his career, he ranks among New Zealand’s most experienced leaders, having captained in nearly 100 ODIs. Williamson has also scored centuries in both innings of a Test match, demonstrating remarkable skill and steady focus.

Ben Stokes (England)

Ben Stokes leads England’s ‘Bazballstyle with bold and fearless play, transforming Test cricket through brave decisions and innovative tactics. As captain, he supports attacking play and taking risks instead of following old ways. His biggest record includes hitting the most sixes in Test history at 133. It shows the fast-paced style he brings, mixing fun with strong drive.

MS Dhoni (India)

MS Dhoni turned the Chennai team into a winning machine with ice-cold choices and strong trust in his players. He stayed calm even in tough moments and changed how people see captaincy. His top record includes the most stumpings in international cricket at 195. It pays tribute to his quick reflexes behind the stumps in high-stakes games.

Rohit Sharma (India)

Rohit Sharma shocked Indian cricket in 2023 with smart field moves and a calm mind. He is known for having the highest score in an innings in ODI history at 264 runs. He also has a total of 637 sixes in 499 international matches. These records show his timing, control, and focus. He changed power-hitting by mixing strength with smooth, clean shots.

Stats vs strategy: Which bears more weight?

While numbers show how a captain does, they aren't enough to show a leader's value. There are things that numbers can't measure, like wit, morale, and the inspiration they bring to the team.

In T20 cricket, where data is used a lot, leaders still need feeling and heart. As new stars change the field, the question of who's the best captain remains an ever-changing debate.

After Jos Buttler left his captaincy for England’s white-ball cricket team, Harry Brook has taken over as the new skipper for One-Day International and T20I cricket. He has big responsibilities now, which he needs to perform well on, as he has to live up to being captain.

Brook has experience as the vice-captain for England’s ODI and T20 teams, so this is a natural step up for him. However, people within the English cricket system thought Test captain Ben Stokes was the best candidate.

Succeeding Buttler is a tough task

Now that Brook has taken over as the white-ball captain, he is under pressure to perform. Buttler had a rollercoaster run during his time as the skipper, but the successes were superb, leading England to an ICC Men’s T20 World Cup victory in 2022.

Unfortunately, that was their peak given that they struggled in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup (ODI format). The same went for their Champions Trophy run in 2025, as they lost to Afghanistan. This led to his prompt resignation, leading to Brook’s rise.

Now that Brook is the captain, he has the task of succeeding Buttler. While Jos disappointed fans due to the era after the 2 T20 World Cup, he still won a significant trophy. Brook has to match that success and even surpass that with his new role.

Brook must lead by example

The T20 World Cup will be played in India and Sri Lanka in 2026, which can be Brook’s golden opportunity. He will be the vocal leader, but also a strong batsman. He has a history of performing well, as proven by his match-winning century against Australia in 2024.

Not only that, but he was on the team that won the â€?2 T20 World Cup, so he has a pedigree as a champion. Even though he is only 26, he is ready to be the leader of England’s white-ball cricket team, given that he exited franchise leagues to focus on his new role.

Brook said, ‘It's a real honour to be named England's white-ball captain. Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team

Brook must prove he is the better choice over Stokes

Aside from handling the pressure of succeeding Buttler, Brook must prove that he is the better choice over Stokes. Many people within the England system wanted Stokes to take over as the captain, but Brook was the choice. As long as Brook performs well, he won’t need to hear about Stokes deserving the nod.

Jos Buttler stepped down as the captain of England’s One-Day International (ODI) team after exiting the 2025 Champions Trophy. The search is on for his replacement within the England system, and some candidates have stood out.

Standout player Ben Stokes has received support from a majority of the English cricket community. That is important for the Three Lions as Stokes is a qualified candidate for the vacated role.

Stokes has the characteristics of a captain

Since Buttler was a successful captain in his own right, it can be tough to follow the steps of a fantastic leader. However, many people see Stokes as the perfect replacement as he has all the leadership qualities.

Rob Key, England’s managing director for the cricket team, spoke about how he sees Stokes as the top choice for the role.

He said, ‘He’s an unbelievably good tactician, which we’ve seen in Test cricket, and he’s a leader of men. He’s someone who gets the best out of people. He’s someone that, when the pressure is really on, he’s able to throw a blanket around the players and actually say, “no, no, this is the way forward, keep going with it.And I think they’re the things that you need in leadership

That kind of insight from the managing director shows Stokes is the favourite to win the role. Thankfully, Stokes does not shy away from the spotlight as he has always been a star player in the England system. More importantly, he has been a captain for the Test cricket team, so it is a natural transition.

Stokes is ready to answer the call

Due to his experience as the captain of the Test team, this should be a no-brainer for the England higher-ups. Of course, candidates are still present around the England cricket system, but Stokes is the heavy favourite to replace Buttler, who has retired from the ODI format.

Outside of Stokes, they still have good choices like ODI vice-captain Harry Brook or proven domestic cricket leader Sam Curran. It would be interesting to see how this ends up since England always wants top-tier leaders on the team.

Ben said, ‘If I get the call to come and play, then obviously it’s definitely going to be a yes. But I’m not going to be too disappointed if I don’t it means that I can just sit back and watch everyone else go out and smack it

If he is ready for the call-up, this will be an easy decision from Key and head coach Brendon McCullum. The latter of which has established a good relationship with Stokes during his ODI coaching stint.

The World Test Championship, the premier competition in Test cricket, involves a two-year cycle where teams will play Test matches against others with the top two teams in the points table at the end of the cycle contesting in the Final.

The current edition of the WTC began with the Ashes series between England and Australia in June 2023 with the Final being scheduled in June 2025 at England.

India is the only team to have played in consecutive Finals of the WTC in 2021 and 2023 but unfortunately ended up on the losing side on both occasions. The Men in Blue lead the charts in the WTC 2023-2025 edition too and are in pole position to qualify for a historic third-straight Final in 2025.

WTC has given Test cricket a much-needed fillip and context that it has been searching for long. With points up for grabs in every match, teams have started pushing for wins irrespective of the result of the series.

Batters have also started to become more positive with teams preferring a win over a draw. As a result, they have piled on the runs in the longest format, in quick time too, after the introduction of the WTC.

In this article, we glance through the list of batters with the most runs in the history of the WTC.

Joe Root | 4948 runs

Joe Root leads the way in the list of top scorers in the history of the WTC after it was introduced in 2019. The England batter has amassed 4948 runs from 57 matches, including 16 hundreds and 20 fifties, at an impressive average of 52.08.

Root finished second on the list of top-scorers in the inaugural edition of the WTC from 2019 to 2021 before jumping to the top spot in the next edition. In the current edition too, he is on top of the pile with 1373 runs from just 15 matches.

Root made history by becoming the England batter with the most Test Hundreds when he scored centuries in both innings of the second Test against Sri Lanka in August 2024 to move to 34 centuries in the longest format of the game.

Marnus Labuschagne | 3904 runs

Marnus Labuschagne is second on the list of top run-getters in the history of the WTC with 3904 runs from 45 matches at an average of 52.05. The Aussie has also scored 11 centuries in the WTC.

Labuschagne, who came into the side as a concussion substitute for Steve Smith in the 2019 Ashes series against England, received the opportunity that came his way with both hands. He finished as the top-scorer in the first WTC cycle from 2019 to 2021 with 1675 runs at an astonishing average of 72.82.

Labuschagne also played a key role in taking Australia to the WTC title in 2023 finishing third in the list of top run-scorers in that cycle.

Steve Smith | 3486 runs

Steve Smith, with 3486 runs from 45 matches, is third on the list of players with the most runs in the history of the WTC. Smith has also scored nine hundreds and 17 fifties at an average of 50.52 in the World Test Championship.

Smith was third in the list of top run-getters in the first WTC cycle and also played a crucial role in the Final of the WTC 2023 to help Australia beat India. He scored a brilliant century in the first innings and along with Travis Head batted India out of the contest.

Ben Stokes | 3101 runs

Ben Stokes is fourth on the list of batters with the most runs in the WTC with 3101 runs from 48 matches at an average of 37.81. The southpaw has seven hundreds and 16 half-centuries to his name in the competition.

Stokessuperhuman effort, scoring an unbeaten 135, at Headingley where he single-handedly won the 2019 Ashes Test against Australia by a solitary wicket was one for the ages.

The England captain almost repeated the act in the Lord’s Test in Ashes 2023 but was dismissed for 155 as England fell short by 43 runs.

On the other hand, England are languishing seventh in the standings with nine points from five matches.

Ahead of the series, the hosts have suffered a massive blow as star batter Virat Kohli has pulled out of the first two Tests due to personal reasons.

The likes of Rajat Patidar, Cheteshwar Pujara, Sarfaraz Khan and B Sai Sudharsan are in the race to replace Kohli in the squad.

Led by captain Rohit Sharma, India have announced a spin-heavy squad for the opening Two Tests.

Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel are part of the four-man spin attack.

Vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar and Avesh Khan are the four pacers included in the squad.

Wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel has earned his maiden India call-up as he will be back-up to KL Rahul and KS Bharat.

The England cricket team will be led by star all-rounder Ben Stokes.

Pacer Gus Atkinson and spinners Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir are three uncapped players added to England’s 16-member Test squad.

The Newlands Cricket Ground is one of the world’s most beautiful cricket grounds located in Cape Town, South Africa.

Established in 1888, the Newlands is known for being overlooked by Table Mountain and Devil's Peak, two of the prominent sight-seeing landmarks in Cape Town, the legislative capital of South Africa.

Following a string of renovations, the stadium has increased its seating capacity to 25,000.

The Newlands Cricket Ground is the home of Western Province Cricket, Cape Cobras and MI Cape Town.

Owned by the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA), the Newlands is one of South Africa’s oldest sporting stadiums and staged its first international match, a Test between South Africa and England in 1889. The visitors won the Test by an innings and 202 runs.

Since then, it has hosted 60 Tests, 47 ODIs and 21 T20Is. Let’s have a closer look at the Newlands Test records and stats.

Lowest total

Hosts South Africa recorded the lowest total at the Newlands Cricket Ground in Tests. Chasing 246 in the fourth innings, South Africa were skittled out for 35 in 22.4 overs against England in the final Test of a two-match series in April 1899.

Opening batter Albert Powell (11) was the only South African batter to register double digits in their second innings. For England, pacer Schofield Haigh was the wrecker-in-chief with six wickets. Earlier, England scored 92 in their first innings after opting to bat first while South Africa managed 177. England were bowled for 330 in their second innings. The visitors won the Test by 210 runs.

Batting at number three, captain Stephen Fleming scored 262 off 423 balls in the first innings of the second Test of New Zealand’s tour of South Africa in 2006. His magnificent double hundred was laced with 31 fours and two sixes. Fleming’s innings helped New Zealand post 593/8d. In reply, South Africa scored 512 in their first innings. The visitors were 121/3 in their second innings as the match ended in a draw. South Africa won the three-match Test series 2-0.

Briggsincredible bowling performance helped England thrash the hosts by an innings and 202 runs.

The England cricket team will host arch-rivals Australia for a five-match Ashes 2023 series, starting from June 16.

The upcoming Ashes series will begin with the first England vs Australia Test to be played at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham.

Led by captain Pat Cummins, the Australian cricket team will head into Ashes 2023 brimming with confidence after winning the World Test Championship (WTC) last week. Australia clinched the second edition of WTC after defeating India by 209 runs in the final at the Kennington Oval in London.

Furthermore, Australia are the current holders of the Ashes, having thrashed England 4-0 in the previous five-match Test series at their home.

The visitors have also received a massive boost as pacer Josh Hazlewood will be fit for the first Ashes Test. Hazlewood missed the WTC 2023 final after he failed to recover from a side strain.

On the other hand, the Ben Stokes-led England will aim to claim the urn back, having not won the Ashes since 2015. Under the leadership of Alastair Cook, England won their last Ashes series 3-2 in the UK.

For the hosts, fast bowlers James Anderson and Ollie Robinson have returned to the England squad after missing the Ireland Test as a precaution. Additionally, star pacer Mark Wood is also available for selection for the opening Ashes Test.

However, the hosts will miss the services of their first-choice spinner Jack Leach due to a stress fracture.

In the absence of Leach, England have added Moeen Ali to their Ashes 2023 squad. The 35-year-old had earlier announced his retirement from Test cricket in 2021 but makes a return to England’s red-ball setup.

England all-rounder and Test captain Ben Stokes has hit the most sixes in Tests. He recently overtook Brendon McCullum to take top spot for most sixes in Tests.

Stokes, who is captaining England in Tests, is likely to extend his lead for sixes in Test cricket with a lot of red-ball cricket ahead of him.

Stokes, in fact, went past McCullum's record with the New Zealander as the coach of the English Test team. England's aggressive style of Test cricket means that Stoke is likely to finish his career with a sizeable lead as far as sixes in Tests go.

Meanwhile, after making his Test debut against South Africa in 2004, Brendon McCullum smashed 107 sixes in the 101 Tests that he played.

Considered to be one of the most destructive batters in modern cricket history, the former New Zealand captain amassed 6,453 runs in 101 matches at an average of 38.64. His strike rate in Tests was a healthy 64.6.

Interestingly, McCullum holds the record for the fastest Test century, having reached the milestone off just 54 balls against arch-rivals Australia in Christchurch in 2016. He was eventually dismissed for 145 off just 79 balls, which included 21 fours and six sixes.

McCullum features fourth on the list of most sixes in international cricket, having smashed 398 sixes in 474 matches. Only West IndiesChris Gayle (553), Shahid Afridi of Pakistan (476) and India’s Rohit Sharma (464) have hit more sixes in international cricket.

Former Australian wicket-keeper batter Adam Gilchrist has also hit 100 sixes in Tests.

While Gilchrist clobbered 100 sixes in 96 Tests, Stokes has smashed the same number of sixes in just 82 Tests.

Chris Gayle and former South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis complete the top five list of most sixes in Tests. Gayle hit 98 sixes in the 103 Test matches that he played while Kallis smashed 97 sixes in 166 Tests.

Virender Sehwag has hit the most sixes in Test match cricket for an Indian. The former opening batter hit 91 sixes in 104 Tests and features sixth on the list of most sixes in Tests. Sehwag managed 243 sixes in 374 matches in international cricket.

Meanwhile, MS Dhoni features second on the list of most sixes by Indians in Tests. The former India captain smashed 78 sixes in the 90 Tests that he played between 2005 and 2014.

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar is third on the list of most sixes by Indians in Tests. Having made his Test debut against Pakistan in 1989, Tendulkar hit 69 sixes in 200 Tests. The India cricket legend ended his illustrious career with 264 sixes in 664 matches.

Rohit Sharma and Kapil Dev complete the top five list of most sixes by Indians in Tests. While Rohit has smashed 66 sixes in just 46 Test matches, Kapil Dev hit 61 sixes in 131 Tests.

England cricket team all-rounder Ben Stokes announced his retirement from One Day International cricket on Monday, July 18, and played his final ODI against South Africa on Tuesday, July 19.

Stokes could manage just five runs in his swansong ODI fixture at his home ground of Durham as England fell short by 62 runs while chasing 334 against South Africa. On the bowling front, the all-rounder registered a haul of 0/44.

The 31-year-old, who was born in Christchurch in New Zealand but raised in the town of Cockermouth in England, made his ODI debut against Ireland in August 2011 and has since been one of their top performers in the 50-overs format.

During his 11-year career in ODI cricket, Ben Stokes featured in 105 games and played a crucial role in England winning their first 50-over ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019 at home.

One of the top performing all-rounders across all formats, Ben Stokes has always delivered for England in crunch situations in 50-overs cricket. With this in mind, we take a look at some Ben StokesODI records and achievements.

Total runs and wickets in ODI cricket

Ben Stokes has aggregated 2,924 runs and 74 wickets in 105 ODIs.

With the bat, the left-hander has three centuries and 21 fifties at an average of 38.98 and a strike rate of 95.08 since his ODI debut in 2011.

As far as his bowling is concerned, Stokes has an economy rate of 6.05 with one five-wicket and one four-wicket haul in 50-over cricket.

Highest individual score in ODI cricket

Ben Stokestop performance with the bat in ODI cricket came against Australia in a 2017 ICC Champions Trophy match at Birmingham. The all-rounder hit an unbeaten 102 off 109 balls.

Stokes smashed as many as 13 boundaries as he guided England - who were 35 for three at one point - to a score of 240/4, which helped the Three Lions win the fixture by 40 runs on DLS.

Among his top 10 high scores in ODI cricket, Ben Stokesunbeaten 84 in the 2019 Cricket World Cup final against New Zealand at Lord’s will be his most fondly remembered 50-over innings.

Set a target of 242 to chase, hosts England were reduced to 71/3 in 19.3 overs before Stokes arrived to bat. Coming in to bat at number five, the all-rounder would remain unbeaten as he slammed five boundaries and two sixes in his 98-ball composed knock to help England tie New Zealand’s score at 241 and take the CWC final to a Super Over.

With 15 runs still needed in the Super Over, Ben Stokes slammed eight of the total runs required and helped England win the final. He was adjudged the Player of the Match for his heroics.

Best bowling figures in ODI cricket

Ben Stokes registered his best bowling figures of 5/61 against Australia in 2013.

While Australia opted to bat first, Stokes grabbed the back-to-back wickets of Aaron Finch (26) and Matthew Wade (0) in the Southampton ODI to reduce the visitors to 48/3 in 9.5 overs.

His other victims were Shane Watson (143), Adam Voges (8) and Mitchell Johnson (2).

Stokesimpressive spell with the ball, however, was in a losing cause as England (249) fell short of Australia’s 298 by 49 runs.
