Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam have been captains of the Pakistan National Cricket Team at one point in their careers. Thus, they are some of the biggest figures in Pakistan cricket, but their story takes a tragic turn in 2025. Both are now under controversy with a public outcry calling for the termination of their contracts.

Former professional cricketer, Sikander Bakht, is the most vocal figure on this topic. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have also been stern with both cricketers but have not responded to the request for their termination.

Do Rizwan and Azam deserve to be sacked for recent events? Here are different angles to ponder about the topic:

‘They are employees of the PCB- Sikander Bakht

Sikander Bakht is vocal in his distaste for Rizwan and Azam’s decision to opt out of the National T20 Cup. It is the biggest domestic T20 cricket league where all professional cricketers with contracts with the PCB are expected to participate. However, Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam were completely absent from training at their respective clubs.

Therefore, these two star cricketers are disrespecting the PCB, according to Bakht in his interview with Geo Super in March 2025. The former professional cricketer called PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi to be strict about this matter. Bakht stressed that the punishment should be the cancellation of Rizwan and Azam’s contract.

What was going on with Rizwan and Azam?

Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam weren’t always under fire. They were once celebrated athletes in the country, even becoming captains of the national team. However, they performed poorly in the 2025 ICC Champions Cup that they were not included in the T20I squad against New Zealand as of writing.

Azam is in a better situation of the two for his captaincy showcased positive results in the past. He may be blamed for the 2023 ODI World Cup disaster, but he had a good run from 2021 to 2023.

However, Azam had an inconsistent performance in the domestic league in 2024/25. His decision to withdraw was due to his decreasing performance and desire to rest and reserve his strength for more important international appearances. No matter his reason, he is still skipping an important competition where he’s expected to play under the PCB contract.

Mohammad Rizwan, on the other hand, experienced a humiliating season as the T20I captain in 2024/25. He was blamed for Pakistan’s winless campaign at the ICC Champions Trophy, which prompted the PCB to drop him as T20I captain. Following this decision, he announced that he wouldn’t play at the National T20 Cup as well.

Should PCB cancel their contract?

Bakht firmly believes that Mohsin Naqvi should terminate both Rizwan and Azam. In his point of view, these are two employees with significant salaries, so their deliberate absence is disrespectful to the PCB.

Fans are rightfully critical of Rizwan and Azam after their wavering performances. However, these are not grounds for termination. Plus, both players are still in the Pakistan Squad for the ODI Series against New Zealand. Thus, terminating them now is letting go of valuable assets in international events.

The two teams will later travel to Centurion for the second T20I scheduled to be held at the SuperSport Park on December 13. The third and final T20I of the series will be played at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on December 14.

South Africa are currently placed sixth in the ICC men’s T20I team rankings while Pakistan are one spot below on seventh.

All-rounder George Linde has also made a comeback to the T20I squad after a gap of three years.

On the other hand, the Pakistan national cricket team will head into the series high on confidence after registering a 2-1 T20I series win in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe last week.

Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan will once again lead Pakistan in the three-match T20I series.

Star batter Babar Azam has returned to Pakistan’s T20I squad for the forthcoming series in South Africa. Fakhar Zaman was not considered for the T20I squad as he is yet to regain form and match fitness.

The SuperSport Park is one of the iconic cricket stadiums located in Centurion, Gauteng, South Africa.

Originally named as Centurion Park, the SuperSport Park has a seating capacity of 22,000 and also features Beach Cabana type hospitality chalets on the grass banks. It has a beautiful outfield with one of the best drainage facilities.

Considered to be one of the cricket grounds with the best players' facilities in the world, the SuperSport Park staged its first One-Day International (ODI) between hosts South Africa and India in December 1992. India won the match by four wickets.

The SuperSport Park later hosted its first Test match played between South Africa and England in November 1995. The match ended in a draw.

Later in 2009, it staged its first T20 international match that featured hosts South Africa and Australia. Under the leadership of Johan Botha, South Africa won the game by 17 runs.

The SuperSport Park is the home ground of the South African cricket team, Titans cricket team and SA20’s Pretoria Capitals.

It was also one of the venues that hosted ICC World Cup 2003 and ICC Champions Trophy 2009. It also staged the Indian T20 League in 2009.

T20 cricket is a form of the game where strike rates are equally important as the runs scored. The rate of scoring in T20s has gone up over a period of time with batters paying more emphasis to the rate at which they score.

As a result, the teams depend more on collective cameos from many of their players rather than high scores from an individual player. With the bowlers also catching up on the new tricks to outfox batters in the shorter format, the willow wielders have gone all-out to help the team’s cause.

In this backdrop where high scores in T20s on a consistent basis is almost next to impossible, some batters have taken the art of power-hitting to the next level. They have made big runs consistently and that too at excellent strike rates.

In this article, we glance through the list of batters with the most runs in a calendar year in T20s.

The World Test Championship, the premier competition in Test cricket, involves a two-year cycle where teams will play Test matches against others with the top two teams in the points table at the end of the cycle contesting in the Final.

The current edition of the WTC began with the Ashes series between England and Australia in June 2023 with the Final being scheduled in June 2025 at England.

India is the only team to have played in consecutive Finals of the WTC in 2021 and 2023 but unfortunately ended up on the losing side on both occasions. The Men in Blue lead the charts in the WTC 2023-2025 edition too and are in pole position to qualify for a historic third-straight Final in 2025.

WTC has given Test cricket a much-needed fillip and context that it has been searching for long. With points up for grabs in every match, teams have started pushing for wins irrespective of the result of the series.

Batters have also started to become more positive with teams preferring a win over a draw. As a result, they have piled on the runs in the longest format, in quick time too, after the introduction of the WTC.

In this article, we glance through the list of batters with the most runs in the history of the WTC.

He finished as the top-scorer in the first WTC cycle from 2019 to 2021 with 1675 runs at an astonishing average of 72.82.

Labuschagne also played a key role in taking Australia to the WTC title in 2023 finishing third in the list of top run-scorers in that cycle.

Ben Stokes | 3101 runs

Ben Stokes is fourth on the list of batters with the most runs in the WTC with 3101 runs from 48 matches at an average of 37.81. The southpaw has seven hundreds and 16 half-centuries to his name in the competition.

Stokessuperhuman effort, scoring an unbeaten 135, at Headingley where he single-handedly won the 2019 Ashes Test against Australia by a solitary wicket was one for the ages.

The England captain almost repeated the act in the Lord’s Test in Ashes 2023 but was dismissed for 155 as England fell short by 43 runs.
