The Gabba is one of the oldest cricket grounds located in Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, Australia.

Established in 1895, The Gabba is owned by the Queensland Government and has a seating capacity of around 37,000.

Also known as the Brisbane Cricket Ground, The Gabba serves as the home ground of the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League (BBL) and Women’s Bash League (WBBL) and also for the Queensland Bulls in domestic cricket.

Apart from cricket, The Gabba is known to be a multi-speciality stadium which has staged athletics, rugby league, rugby union, Australian rules football, Association football, cycling, baseball, pony, greyhound racing and concerts.

The Gabba hosted its first international cricket match, a Test played between Australia and South Africa in December 1931. Under the leadership of Bill Woodfull, Australia won the Test by an innings and 163 runs.

It later staged its first One-Day International (ODI) that featured England and West Indies in December 1979. 

The Gabba hosted its first-ever T20 international played between hosts Australia and South Africa in January 2006. 

Overall, it has staged 68 Tests, 80 ODIs and 11 T20Is so far. With that being said, let’s have a look at The Gabba Test records and stats.

The Gabba Test records and stats

Highest total

The Australia cricket team holds the record for the highest total at The Gabba in Test cricket. During the first Test of England’s tour of Australia in 1946, the Donald Bradman-led hosts posted a mammoth total of 645 in their first innings after electing to bat. Captain Donald Bradman (187), Lindsay Hassett (128) and Colin McCool (95) helped Australia record the Test total at the venue. Australia later bowled out England for 141 and 172 in their two innings to win the Brisbane Test by an innings and 332 runs.

Lowest total

The India cricket team recorded the lowest total at The Gabba in Test cricket. India were bundled out for 58 in their first innings after Australia posted 382/8d in Brisbane in 1947. Captain Lala Amarnath top-scored for India(22) while Chandu Sarwate (12) was the other batter to reach double digits. For Australia, left-arm medium Ernie Toshack was the wrecker-in-chief with bowling figures of 5/2. After Australia enforced follow-on, India were bowled out for 98 in their second innings as the hosts won the first Test by an innings and 226 runs. Under the leadership of Donald Bradman, Australia won the five-match Test series 4-0.

Most runs

Former Australia cricket team captain Ricky Ponting scored the most runs at this ground in cricket’s longest format in Brisbane. Between 1996 and 2012, Ricky Ponting amassed 1,335 runs in 17 Test matches at an average of 63.57. The right-handed batter  slammed four centuries and 10 fifties at the Brisbane Cricket Ground in Test cricket. Ponting’s former teammate Michael Clarke features second on the list with 1,030 runs in just 10 matches at a staggering average of 103 with five hundreds and two half-centuries to his name.

Most wickets

Legendary Australia spinner Shane Warne bagged the most wickets at The Gabba in Test cricket. The former right-arm leg-spinner scalped 68 wickets in just 11 matches at an average of 20.30 between 1993 and 2006. He claimed seven four-wicket hauls and three fifers at this venue in Brisbane in Test cricket. Former Australia pacer Glenn McGrath is second on the list with 65 wickets in 13 Tests at an average of 21.75.

Highest individual score

Former Australia cricketer Michael Clarke holds the record for the highest individual score at The Gabba in Tests. Batting at number 5, Michael Clarke slammed an unbeaten 259 against South Africa in their first innings of the first Test in Brisbane in November 2012. Michael Clarke’s magnificent double century was laced with 26 fours to help Australia post 565/5d after they bowled out South Africa for 450. South Africa scored 166/5 in their second innings as the Brisbane Test ended in a draw.

Best bowling figures in an innings

Legendary New Zealand all-rounder Richard Hadlee registered the best bowling figures in an innings of a Test at this venue in November 1985. Richard Hadlee recorded match-winning figures of 9/52 to help New Zealand bowl out Australia for 179 in their first innings. The former right-arm pacer dismissed Kepler Wessels, Andrew Hilditch, David Boon, Allan Border, Greg Ritchie, Wayne Phillips, Greg Matthews, Craig McDermott and Bob Holland. New Zealand won the Brisbane Test by an innings and 41 runs. Led by Jeremy Coney, New Zealand later clinched the three-match Test series 2-1. 

Best bowling figures in a match

Richard Hadlee also holds the record for the best bowling figures in a Test match at The Gabba in Test cricket. Richard Hadlee took 15 wickets during the first Test of New Zealand’s tour of Australia in 1985. While Hadlee picked up nine wickets for 52 runs in the first innings, the right-arm fast bowler claimed six wickets for 71 runs in the second innings. Hadlee’s incredible bowling performance helped New Zealand win the Test by an innings and 41 runs.

Highest partnership

Former England cricketers Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott recorded the highest partnership at The Gabba in Test cricket. During the first Test of England’s tour of Australia in November 2010, Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott forged an unbeaten 329-run stand for the second wicket to power England to 517/1d in their second innings. Opening batter Alastair Cook slammed 235 not out while Jonathan Trott remained unbeaten on 135. The Brisbane Test later ended in a dull draw.

The Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates was opened in May 2004 and staged its first first-class match when Scotland played Kenya in the Intercontinental Cup in November the same year.

The Sheikh Zayed Stadium made its international debut with an India-Pakistan ODI match on April 18, 2006, which Pakistan won by six wickets.

With a seating capacity of 20000, the Sheikh Zayed Stadium is dominated by two large stands at either end. The areas to the square of the wicket offer large grass banks for spectators to sit.

Four years after its ODI debut, the Sheikh Zayed Stadium made its T20I bow in February 2010 in a World T20 Qualifier between Afghanistan and Scotland, a match Afghanistan won by 14 runs. 

A few months later in November the same year, the venue hosted its first Test match, between Pakistan and South Africa which ended in a draw.

With that said, let us glance through all the ODI records and stats at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

Most runs

Pakistan’s Misbah-ul-Haq has the most runs in ODIs played at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The middle-order batter accumulated 585 runs from 15 innings at an impressive average of 48.75.

Misbah has a total of six fifties at the venue with the unbeaten 79 in Pakistan’s 31-run win over the West Indies in 2008 being his highest score. Mohammad Hafeez of Pakistan is second on the list with 576 runs from 18 matches.

Most wickets

Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal is on top of the bowlers�charts with 29 wickets from 18 ODIs at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium. He averages 23.79 and has an economy of 4.05 in ODIs at the venue.

Ajmal registered his best figures of 5/43 at the venue in Pakistan’s 130-run loss to England in 2012. Ajmal’s former teammate Umar Gul is second on the list with a tally of 28 wickets from 16 matches.

Highest Total

Pakistan’s 313/9 against Sri Lanka in an ODI in 2007 is the highest total by a team at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. 

Pakistan opener Salman Butt top-scored in the match with 74 runs off 81 balls, which included 11 fours. Yasir Hameed also supported well scoring a 53-ball 50 with seven hits to the fence. Entertaining cameos from captain Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Sami powered Pakistan past the 300-run mark. 

In response, Sri Lanka could manage only 215 before getting all out. Shahid Afridi picked up 3/37 for Pakistan while Mohammad Asif, Sami and Umar Gul got two wickets each.

Lowest Total

Afghanistan had the ignominy of registering the lowest total in ODIs at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium when they were skittled out for 63 in a 150-run loss to Scotland in 2015. Batting first, Scotland got to a respectable total of 213/7 with half-centuries from Richie Berrington and Josh Davey.

In response, Afghanistan could not pose a challenge as Josh Davey and Iain Wardlaw picked up 6/28 and 4/22, respectively. Only three batters were able to reach the double-figure mark for Afghanistan in that match.

Highest individual score

Alastair Cook’s 137 in England’s 130-run win over Pakistan in 2012 is the highest individual score in ODIs at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. 

The England skipper led from the front with his majestic knock which came in 142 balls to help his side post a challenging 260/7 while batting first. Cook’s innings was laden with 14 boundaries and he received good support from Ravi Bopara who scored 50 off 69 balls.

Pakistan were bowled out for 130 in the chase and Cook was deservingly adjudged the Player of the Match.

Best bowling figures in a match

Josh Davey’s 6/28 in Scotland’s 150-run rout of Afghanistan in 2015 is the best bowling figures recorded by a player in an ODI at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium. Davey’s career-best bowling figures in ODIs also subjected Afghanistan to the lowest ODI total recorded at the venue.

Davey had a dream match as he had earlier scored an unbeaten fifty to guide Scotland to a respectable total of 213/7 in the first innings. The medium-pacer won the Player of the Match for his all-round efforts in the contest.

Highest Partnership

Misbah-ul-Haq and Kamran Akmal’s unbeaten association of 198 runs for the fourth wicket against Australia in 2009 is the highest partnership in ODIs recorded at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

In pursuit of 251, the partnership helped Pakistan out of a precarious situation as they were reduced to 56/3. Akmal top-scored for Pakistan with an unbeaten 116 while Misbah remained not out on 76 at the other end as the Men in Green pocketed the contest by seven wickets with three overs to spare.

Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for the most runs in Test, having scored 15,921 runs in a record 200 Tests.

The legendary cricketer, who made his Test debut in 1989 against Pakistan, slammed 51 centuries and 68 fifties in his 24-year career and holds a multitude of records, one being most centuries in the longest format.

If there is something that eluded Tendulkar, it is a triple ton in red-ball cricket as his highest score was an unbeaten 248 against Bangladesh at Dhaka in 2004.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting comes in second on the list for most runs in Test. The most successful ODI captain of all time, Ponting hit 13,378 runs in 168 matches and is the only player to finish with most Test runs in a calendar year twice.

Legendary South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis amassed 13,289 Test runs in 166 matches, thus sits third for most runs in Test. Kallis has hit the second-most Test centuries in red-ball cricket and is also remembered as one of the leading six-hitting machines in the format.

Rahul Dravid and Alastair Cook round up the top five list for most runs in Test.

Dravid, for one, scored 13,288 Test runs in 164 matches at an average of 52.31 and holds the record for most balls faced in Tests. In his 16-year Test career, ‘The Wall�hit 36 hundreds and 63 half-centuries.

Alastair Cook, meanwhile, is England’s record Test run-getter with 12,472 runs in 161 Tests and the most successful left-handed batter in Tests.

Among active cricketers, England’s Joe Root has registered the most runs in Test. The England cricket team skipper has 12,274 runs in 145 matches.

Former England cricket team captain Joe Root recently became the 14th player to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket.

Root achieved the feat on the fourth day of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s Cricket Ground. His unbeaten 115 helped England secure an incredible five-wicket win over the reigning World Test Champions.

At 31 years and 157 days, Root also became the joint-youngest player to reach the milestone, equalling the record of his former teammate Alastair Cook, who also achieved the feat at exactly the same age.

Root has now amassed 10,015 runs in 118 Test matches at an impressive average of 49.58. He has hit 26 hundreds and 53 half-centuries in his career so far.

Who was the first player to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket?

India cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar was the first player to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket. The former India opener etched his name into the history books on March 7, 1987 after he reached the incredible milestone against Pakistan in his 124th Test in Ahmedabad.

Gavaskar ended his career with 10,122 runs in 125 matches at an average of 51.12. He registered 34 centuries and 45 fifties to his name.

Who was the fastest to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket?

Former West Indies cricketer Brian Lara is the fastest to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket. Lara achieved the feat against England in his 111th match in Manchester in 2004.

Former India batter Sachin Tendulkar has recorded the most centuries in Test cricket. Regarded as one of the greatest batters in cricket history, Tendulkar smashed 51 hundreds in the longest format of the game. 

Having made his Test debut against Pakistan in 1989, the right-hander amassed 15,921 runs in 200 Test matches at an impressive average of 53.78 with 68 fifties to his name. It is still the all-time highest runs scored in Test cricket.

The Maharashtra-born cricketer also holds the record for the highest run-scorer of all time in international cricket. 

The second on the list for most centuries in Test cricket features former South Africa cricketer Jacques Kallis. The former all-rounder hit 45 hundreds in his Test career. Between 1995 and 2013, Kallis aggregated 13289 runs in 166 Tests at an average of 55.37.

Former Australia cricket team captain Ricky Ponting is third on the list for most centuries in Test cricket. Ponting smashed 21 tons in the longest format. Having batted mostly at number three, the right-handed batter accumulated 13378 runs in 168 Tests at an average of 51.85. 

Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara and India’s Rahul Dravid complete the top five list for most centuries in Test cricket. The ex-Sri Lanka skipper registered 38 Test tons while Dravid hit 36 hundreds in his Test career.

While Sangakkara amassed 12400 runs in 134 Test matches at an average of 57.40, Dravid ended his Test career with 13288 runs in 164 games at an average of 52.31.

Steve Smith and Virat Kohli have scored the most centuries in Test cricket among active cricketers, smashing 27 hundreds each.

Test cricket in 2010s was a spectacle to behold. There were edge-of-the-seat thrillers, some extraordinary individual battles and some outstanding team performances. Here we try to identify the Test team of the decade by factoring in the following:

1. Test batting average 
2. Test bowling average
3. Performance in Home/Away/Neutral venues

Openers

While there were a handful of openers who made an impression in the 2010s, two left-handers as contrasting as the sun and the moon make it to the Test team of the decade. Retired England opener Alastair Cook averaged 46.15 in the 2010s with 23 hundreds and 37 half-centuries. The century count includes a spectacular double hundred against the pink ball, underlining his abilities in modern Test cricket. 

His partner would be the indomitable David Warner who ended a run of poor form in 2019 with a triple hundred against Pakistan at home. Warner averages 49.08 in Tests with 23 centuries and 30 half-centuries. The contrast the two openers offer make them must-picks in the team of the decade.

Middle-order

Two of the Fab four - Virat Kohli and Steven Smith - are certainties in the Test middle order of the decade. While the Indian captain averages 54.97 with 27 hundreds and 22 half-centuries this decade, Smith has a stunning average of 63.14 with 26 tons and 27 fifties. Kohli is the unanimous choice for captain too given how India's Test fortunes have taken off under him. He has the best win/loss ratio and most wins as captain in this decade.

Identifying the all-rounder and the two other middle-order batsmen including a keeper is an arduous task with quite a few contenders popping up - Kane Williamson, Joe Root, AB de Villiers, Ben Stokes, Shakib Al Hasan, Cheteshwar Pujara, Kumar Sangakkara, Jason Holder, BJ Watling all being worthy names in the middle-order, keeping and all-rounder categories. 

AB de Villiers, for a stunning ability to switch between attack and defence and an average of 57.48 in the decade with 13 centuries makes the list as does BJ Watling as a keeper. The New Zealand wicket-keeper batsman has flown under the radar but has an average of 42.6 with seven centuries this decade batting at as low as no.7. We think he is good enough for no.6. Kumar Sangakkara, with a Test average of 61.4 and 17 centuries is in as 12th man in the team. 

Jason Holder pips Stokes and Shakib for the all-rounder slot. The West Indian skipper averages 32.72 with the bat with three centuries and has 106 wickets at 26.37 with the ball this decade. His lower-order grit and bowling consistency is hard to look past.

Bowlers

With Jason Holder already in the side as a pacer, we have gone in with two other pacers and two spinners in the Test team of the decade.

While Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn, Pat Cummins, Stuart Broad and Neil Wagner all make sound cases, our pacers of the decade are Mitchell Starc and James Anderson. The left-arm pacer, Starc, averages 26.94 with the ball this decade and has 13 five-wicket hauls. Anderson, meanwhile, averages 24.19 with 20 five-wicket hauls and the two offer a good combination of skill and pace in the fast bowling department.

Rangana Herath and Ravichandran Ashwin are inevitable picks from the spin-bowling category. The Indian off-spinner has an average of 25.36 with the ball and nearly 30 with the bat and will slot in at no.8 behind the batsmen. He also has a whopping 27 five-wicket hauls this decade which is however, bettered by Herath's 30. The Sri Lankan left-arm spinner averages 26.41 with the ball and has 363 wickets this decade, one more than Ashwin.

Alastair Cook believes England can end decades of World Cup disappointment with a triumph on home soil this year.

England have never won the men's World Cup, but with 100 days to go until the start edition of the latest edition, a team captained by Eoin Morgan are top of the 50-over world rankings.

Former England skipper Cook, who retired from international cricket last year as the country's highest Test run-scorer and most-capped player, said there were several reasons why Morgan's men could go one better than the England teams that lost in the 1979, 1987 and 1992 finals.

"They're a very settled side, they've got 15 players pretty much nailed on for that squad," Cook told AFP at a World Cup event in London's Trafalgar Square on Tuesday. 

"Everyone knows their role, they're very comfortable in their role, they've got a lot of strength in depth, they seem to have a lot of options covered and they're an exciting team to watch. 

"They are a brilliant one-day side."

Cook never played in a World Cup, with the left-handed opening batsman dramatically dropped from the squad that then failed to beat a fellow Test nation while suffering a group-stage exit at the 2015 edition in Australia and New Zealand.

But Cook said a change of attitude lay behind England's rise up the one-day rankings since that dismal display.

"Probably over the years we've really concentrated on Test cricket as a nation. Over the last three or four years we've really given the one-day cricket its due," he said.

 'Sky's the limit' 

It was a point emphasised by former England spinner Graeme Swann, who said: "I just think England are picking the right team these days. 

"They're picking one-day specialists and the sky's the limit. 

"When they bat, people like Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, they think that (scoring) 400 is feasible rather than an impossible dream. I think England have finally picked a very aggressive team as well, with Eoin Morgan, who's a brilliant captain.

"They've got a team that is putting them in firm contention to win this World Cup," insisted Swann, who added "I never thought we (England) would win it deep down when I was there."

Swann was a member of the only England men's side to have won a major global trophy -- the 2010 World Twenty20 in the Caribbean -- and sees parallels between that team and Morgan's men.  

"The only world trophy I thought we had a genuine chance of winning was the World Twenty20 in the West Indies that we did, because we were ahead of the curve there.

"We picked a team of specialists, people like Craig Kieswetter, Michael Lumb -- and I think that's what England have finally started doing in the one-day game as well."

 'Never write off India' 

But Swann warned that England would face several tough opponents in their quest for World Cup glory.

"You can never write off India, they are an exceptional one-day team, Virat Kohli is a brilliant captain, brilliant player."

As for champions Australia, England's oldest rivals and five-times World Cup-winners, Swann said: "The Aussies are like Germany in the football -- you can never write them off at a World Cup."

Swann though said he was especially looking forward to watching Pakistan, who won the 2017 Champions Trophy one-day tournament in Britain.

"They are so mercurial, you never know what you are going to get. When they are on fire, they are absolutely explosive and when they're not, they're awful."
